What will this program do for me?
The Department of Hotel & Restaurant Operation at City College of San Francisco will provide you with both academic and hands-on training in many phases of the hospitality industry, including culinary arts, food service, restaurant operations, hotel operations and many more.

What kind of job can I get once I complete the program?
The jobs for which you will be qualified for upon graduation will greatly depend upon both the amount and level of your work experience as well as the education and training you receive in this program. For graduates with little work experience, examples of available positions would be entry-level cooks (pantry or prep), food servers, hotel desk clerks and reservationists. For those with greater experience, positions include line or pastry cooks, restaurant assistant managers and managers. Hotel positions include entry-level management jobs such as front desk, room service or reservations supervisor and assistant managers.

How much can I earn in this career?
Entry-level cooks' pay range between $7 and $14 per hour. Assistant managers in restaurants and hotels generally begin around $20,000 to $28,000 per year. Other than in ownership or in corporate positions, the highest paid hospitality position is usually that of Hotel General Manager, many of whom earn in excess of $100,000 per year. A very wide range of earnings is available between these extremes. For current information regarding salary and job prospects, please refer to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

How long will the program take?
This is a 60-unit Associate Degree Program. The program takes a minimum of four semesters to complete, including the general education requirements. Some students choose to take longer in order to lessen their academic workload each semester.

Where will classes be held?
Most classes are held at the Department's Statler Wing Complex on the Phelan Campus at City College of San Francisco. A few classes are also held at the Downtown Campus and the Southeast Campus. Check the Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

Where do I get more information?
Detailed information will be sent to you along with the application packet. Or you can visit our Web site for more detailed information. If you have questions, please write to hotelandrestaurant@ccsf.edu.

What time of day are classes offered?
Most classes are held during the day with some evening classes required. Fourth semester requires a fifteen hour per week internship at a local hotel or restaurant, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During each semester you will also take both general education and Hotel and Restaurant academic courses. Go to Schedules for Credit Classes for class times and locations.

When do classes start?
Our Program accepts students for both Fall and Spring Semester entrance. Fall Semester usually starts the third week of August and the Spring Semester starts the third week of January. Please refer to the Program Curriculum for more information on course requirements.
