What
is the Community Health Worker Certificate?
It is a 17-unit Certificate of Achievement which will prepare you to
work as a CHW in health clinics and outreach programs. This program
is supportive of working mothers and those working full-time, as well
as for individuals who speak English as a second language. The Community
Health Worker Training Program is jointly sponsored by City College
of San Francisco and San Francisco State University.
What
do Community Health Workers (CHWs) do?
CHWs provide health advising, information, and referrals, carry out
client orientation and intakes, and advocate for client and communities.
They work under some 30 titles, such as Community Health Advisor, Health
Worker, Public Health Aide and Community Health Outreach Worker.
How
much can I earn in this career?
The starting salary for a Health Worker I at the San Francisco Department
of Public Health is $33,748-40,898 with full benefits. CHWs who work
for community-based organizations generally make somewhat less. Please
refer to the Occupational
Outlook Handbook for more information regarding job outlook
and salary scales.
How
long will the program take?
Full-time students can complete the Certificate in two semesters. Most
people in the program work full-time and therefore take more time to
complete the program.
Where
will classes be held?
Most classes will be held at City College Phelan Campus (Ocean and Phelan
Ave.). Check the Schedules for Credit Classes for a listing of class times and locations.

can I get more information? For more information, call the Community

if you are not already a CHW you will need to be available for field
placement several hours per week during business hours. For more information,

Are
there prerequisite courses?

CHWs should call our office for a waiver application.
