  Mechanical Engineering Technology

What will this program do for me?
The program is designed to provided the educational requirements for entry level jobs as an Mechanical Technician or CAD/Design Drafter.

What kind of job can I get once I complete the program?
Mechanical engineering technicians help engineers to design, develop, test, and manufacture industrial machinery, consumer products, and other equipment. They may assist in product tests—by setting up instrumentation for auto crash tests, for example. They may make sketches and rough layouts, record data, make computations, analyze results, and write reports. When planning production, mechanical engineering technicians prepare layouts and drawings of the assembly process and of parts to be manufactured. They estimate labor costs, equipment life, and plant space. Some test and inspect machines and equipment or work with engineers to eliminate production problems.

CAD/Design Drafter prepares technical drawings and plans used by production and construction workers to build everything from manufactured products, such as toys, toasters, industrial machinery, and spacecraft, to structures, such as houses, office buildings, and oil and gas pipelines. Their drawings provide visual guidelines, show the technical details of the products and structures, and specify dimensions, materials, and procedures. Drafters fill in technical details, using drawings, rough sketches, specifications, codes, and calculations previously made by engineers, surveyors, architects, or scientists. For example, they use their knowledge of standardized building techniques to draw in the details of a structure. Some drafters use their knowledge of engineering and manufacturing theory and standards to draw the parts of a machine in order to determine design elements, such as the numbers and kinds of fasteners needed to assemble the machine. Drafters use technical handbooks, tables, calculators, and computers to complete their work.

How much can I earn in this career?
The 2002 median nation wide salary for Mechanical Engineering Technician was $41,280. Bay Area salaries may be higher. Refer to Occupational Outlook Handbook for salary and job outlook information.

What are the prerequisites?
Math through trigonometry and high school physics. City College offers all the equivalent course work for these prerequisites.

How long will the program take?
Theoretically two years if fully prepared and you are a full time student taking a full load. Some summer school course work would likely be required. Most students take longer because of lack of prerequisites courses and/or taking less than a full time load. Check the Program Curriculum for more information regarding course requirements.

Where will classes be held?
