Levels of ESL Credit Courses
The normal sequence of courses leading to the completion of the ESL Program is ESL 110, ESL 120, ESL 130, ESL 140, ESL 150 and ESL 160. Students who pass ESL 160 with a ‘C’ or better may use it as a pre-requisite to English 93, and then proceed through the English sequence. Students who are advised to take ESL Listening/Speaking courses (ESL 112, 122, 132, and 142) at the ESL Credit Placement Test should continue the sequence in subsequent semesters for best results.
ESL 82 was discontinued as of Fall 2006, but still satisfies the written composition requirement for an AA/AS degree at CCSF if the student has 04-05 (or earlier) catalog rights, and it will satisfy the written composition transfer requirement for CSU if taken before Fall 2006.
ESL 170, beginning in Fall 2009, no longer satisfies the written composition requirement for an AA/AS degree at CCSF. However, students with catalog rights prior to 09-10 may still use ESL 170 for graduation; see a City College counselor for more information.
Most students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university must complete English 1A and should see a City College counselor for more information.
