Wait lists will be activated when registration begins
- Question: Do all classes have wait lists?
Answer: No, only some classes will have wait lists.
- Question: How do wait lists work?
Answer: During the pre-registration period, before the start of school, when a class is
full (closed) but spaces remain on the wait list, students will have the choice of adding to the
wait list for that class. Later, if a space becomes available in the class, the next student on the
wait list will be sent an email, and will need to act to move from the wait list into the class.
- Question: How can I tell if a closed class has a wait list available?
Answer: Several ways:
- You can look on the online time schedule. Classes that are closed but have room available on
the wait list will say "Waitlist".
- On the Add/Drop Classes screen in Web4, if a student attempts to add a class that is closed but
has room available in the wait list, the status message will say "Closed - Wait List Available -
X students are already on the wait list" (where X is the number of students currently on the wait
list).
- Question: The class I want is full, but there's room on the wait list. How do I get on the
wait list?
Answer: On the Add/Drop Classes screen in Web4 (see screen shot below), click on the
drop-down menu under "Action". You will see two choices: "None" and "Wait List". Select "Wait List",
then click the "Submit Changes" button at the bottom.

Once you have been added to the Wait List, look at your current schedule. The "Status" column
will say "Wait List", followed by the date you added onto the wait list (see screen shot below).
- Question: How will I know if a seat becomes available and I can move up from the wait list?
Answer: When a seat becomes available and you're at the top of the wait list, you will
be sent an email. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ACT ON THIS EMAIL.
To move from the wait list to the available space, log onto Web4 and go to the Add/Drop Classes
screen to see your current schedule. Change the drop-down menu under the "Action" column from "None"
to "**Registered**", then click on the "Submit Changes" button (see screenshot below).
Once you have moved up from the Wait List, look at your current schedule again. The "Status"
column should now say "**Registered**", followed by the date you registered for the class (see
screenshot below).
- Question: What happens if I don't act within 48 hours of a space opening up for me?
Answer: You will be removed from the wait list, and the next student on the wait list
will be offered the seat in class. If you want to go back on the wait list, you will have to sign up
again, and you will be added to the end of the wait list.
- Question: Can I see how many students are ahead of me on the wait list?
Answer: Yes. When you first attempt to add the class, the message you get will indicate
how many students are ahead of you on the wait list. Once you have added onto the wait list, you can
look at the Student Detail Schedule page in Web4 to see your wait list position.
- Question: Will I be assessed fees for being on the wait list?
Answer: No, you will only be charged an enrollment fee when you are officially
registered in the course.
- Question: How many students can be on the wait list for a class?
Answer: The wait list capacity is established by the department, and will usually be
between 10 and 25. Once the wait list is full, the "Status" column on the Add/Drop screen will
indicate "CLOSED - WAIT LIST FULL."
- Question: Is it 48 hours from when the seat opens, or 48 hours from when I happen to get
my email?
Answer: The 48 hours start from when we send you email. If you are on a wait list,
please check your email regularly.
- Question: I'm registered in one section of a class, but I'd like to be in a different
section. Can I put myself on the wait list for the other section without dropping the one I'm in?
Answer: No. If you are registered for one section of a class, you cannot add onto the
wait list for a different section.
- Question: I can't register for any of the sections of a class I need. Can I put myself on
the wait list for more than one section?
Answer: No - you can only be on one wait list for a given class.
- Question: There are two different classes that I need, both of which are closed.
Can I put myself on the wait list for both?
Answer: Yes.
- Question: I'm registered for a class, but want to try to add a different class that meets
at the same time. Can I put myself on the wait list for the other class?
Answer: Yes, however, if space becomes available in the wait listed class, you will
need to decide whether to stay enrolled in the first class, or drop the first class and add the
second class.
- Question: Will students on a wait list be automatically enrolled in the class if space
becomes available?
Answer: NO. Students will receive an email if space becomes available and they are
next on the wait list. STUDENTS WILL HAVE 48 HOURS TO TAKE ACTION.
- Question: What happens if I never move up off the wait list, and the class is about to
start?
Answer: The class lists available to instructors will include those students who
remained on the wait list on the first day of classes. Instructors may use this wait list to add
students during the Add/Drop Period. Add Codes will be required at that time since the wait list
function will be turned off.
- Question: Who should I call if I have other questions?
Answer: For questions related to the Wait List or Registration, call Admissions and
Records, 415-239-3732.
