How JUDO Competition is Conducted
A player attempts to throw an opponent onto his or her back
with control, skill and force in order to score a full point,
or “Ippon”. This is an equivalent to a pin
in wrestling or a knockout in boxing. “Ippon” can
also be scored by a holding an opponent down, with control,
for 25 seconds. Partial points are also awarded if throws do
not have enough force, speed or control, or in opponents escape
from a hold-down in less than 25 seconds.
In adult competition, “Ippon” can also be scored
by applying a strangle hold or elbow joint lock until the opponents
submits.
If a full point has not been scored by the end of the contest
time limit, the player with the most partial points wins; if
tied, the referee and two judges decide who is the winner.
The contest area is a square, at least 8 meters by 8 meters
on a side (10 meters is the maximum). The outer meter
is a red in color and is called the “warning zone”. This
warning zone is inside the contest area, but the thrower remains
inside the contest area. |
