- PBL and EFF:

  • The Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy has released a new publication, titled Equipped for the Future (EFF): Tools & Standards for Building & Assessing Quality Adult Literacy Programs.This publication reviews the developmental history of EFF and discusses its accomplishments, implementation, and work in progress.   • Teacher support pages for the Math Forum's Problems of the Week (PoWs) were written during the 2002-2003 school year to provide resources for teachers who used the problems with their students.   • Phone Book Math Did the phone company just deliver new phone books to your door? Don't throw out the old ones -- ask students to bring them to school.   • The new GED 2002 curriculum Web site is offering 4 online professional development modules covering the three literacy strands: math, writing and critical thinking/graphics.   • "The Evaluation Exchange" from the Harvard Family Research Project explores key dimensions of education reform, including standards-based reform, technology in education, The project addresses links among education policy, practice, and evaluation and how research and evaluation can inform policy and practice.   • "The Effect of Classroom Practice on Student Achievement" is a research brief authored by Harold Wenglisky of the Educational Testing Service that supports the contention that schools, and specifically teachers, rather than student background characteristics (e.g., race, parental education, income) exert the biggest impact on learning. - Distance Learning

  • The Independent Study High School of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers a fully accredited self-paced curriculum option offering high school courses in a diploma and non-diploma program. The site contains over 160 total courses in more than 15 subjects. http://www.unl.edu/ishs
  • The Online Training Institute provides training in many varied areas, including the five GED test areas. Courses are self-paced and self-guided, but teachers are available for consultation. http://www.oltraining.com
  • Distance Education Clearinghouse is a terrific place to begin your inquiries into distance learning. The site is easy to navigate and contains information that is useful for all experience levels. It will be valuable to any practitioner who wants to learn more about distance education.   • Expanding Access to Adult Literacy with Online Distance Education is an occasional paper published by the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy.
