Teaching Materials for
Vocational English as a Second Language at City College of
San Francisco
2006-2007 Sabbatical
Project Sara Jacobson, Teacher City College of San Francisco,
ESL Department
Rationale:
An increasing number of
English as a Second Language (ESL) students at City College of San
Francisco (CCSF) have expressed interest in learning job-specific
English, either to improve their job performance or to increase
their chances of finding work. In response to this interest, CCSF
has been expanding the numbers and types of vocational ESL (VESL)
classes offered.
This web site is the result of a series of surveys
conducted to learn more about available VESL teaching materials and
more about what our students need to succeed in the work place.
Surveys
Conducted:
I conducted three types
of survey during the 2006-2007 school year:
- a survey
of CCSF VESL teachers to learn what materials they found most
useful.
- an exploration of the internet and the CCSF Resource Center to
locate additional information and materials.
- a series of taped interviews with members of the San Francisco
Bay Area work force, conducted in collaboration with fellow CCSF
ESL teacher, Venette Cook, who was working on a similar,
grant-funded project.
On this web site you will
find:
- a list of available VESL teaching materials, with comments
from teachers
- tape scripts and lessons generated from interviews with
members of the local Bay Area work force
Please refer to the menu on the
left.
CCSF VESL teachers have contributed much of
the information contained on this web site. Additional
contributions, suggestions and comments are welcomed. Contact: sjacobso@ccsf.edu
