What happened on September 11 was so fast, so shocking that it made my heart stop and my eyes
open wide. The result of the evil act was the loss of thousands of people’s lives, a feeling of
bitterness, and rage for vengeance. These are very good reasons to strike back, but not enough
when talking about other people’s lives and misery. There are several reasons I believe that
going into war against the Taliban regime was a mistake.
After the September 11 attack I felt angry and I jumped to the conclusion that Osama Bin Laden was the person who had planned and paid for this monstrous act; the Afghan people who are protecting him are also guilty of the murder of thousands of American people. But then I realized that the Afghan people were innocent because they have never been involved in any terrorist action against the US. They didn’t participate in the attack. We can only blame the Taliban regime that not only allowed the terrorists to assassinate civilians, but also protected those responsible for the hijackings and the deaths of many people. Afghanistan is a poor country with no health care, education or economy at all. Afghans are the people who are suffering and starving to death. The US is using Afghanistan as a battleground, and in any war there are casualties. Despite the wishes of the American government to destroy only the terrorist camps, the deaths of innocent people cannot be avoided. With the deaths of many innocent people the Islamic world will certainly be pointing to America. The majority of the people in the Islamic world seem to agree that the US is the devil of the world and that we infidels are spreading the disease of Americanism into the Islamic countries with Coca-Cola, Fords and Hilton Hotels. America has only gained the hatred of many Muslims and this is only the beginning of their actions against America. These people hate what we represent. We are rich and superficial. In the future it will be more difficult for the US to manipulate Islamic countries such as Egypt, Iran and Pakistan among others. These countries can become deadly enemies to our country and I don’t think believe that Americans want that. Knowing that many people hate American people, Osama Bin Laden could use this potent weapon against us. With new people who want to get into his organization, in no time the US can be facing another attack as deadly as the first. Chaos and panic will reign in all the cities of America. For an example of the harm that terrorist can do, we should look back at September 11. People are still afraid of retaliations coming from the Islamic world. The American people don’t know what to do. Americans are anxious and restless because of the various cases of biological warfare, that is, Anthrax in Florida and New York. One person died because of the virus and it is obvious that panic and chaos can explode any moment. Now it is too late to do or say anything. The decision has been made and America is already at war. I think we could have avoided the deaths of many people by giving proof to any country of Osama Bin Laden’s guilt. Was it too much to photocopy pages of information and send them to the Taliban or any other country? It seems to me that the answer is no, but for the US it is too late to regret. The American government could have talked with the Taliban regime and gotten the Afghan government to agree to hand Osama Bin Laden to an international court, and in this way, avoid any deaths of Americans soldiers and Afghan civilians. It seems to me that this war will never end. |
