contributed by Nancy Husari Note: Students read articles from: Northstar, Focus on Reading and Writing, Unit 8 before writing this essay. You just read two articles about women in the military. A related issue is the idea of gays in the military. When President Clinton first became President in 1992, one of his first actions was to legitimize the presence of gays in the military. He felt that it was important for gays and lesbians to be able to openly say who they were without fear that they would lose their jobs in the military. However, Clinton was pressured by many individuals and groups to back down, so he compromised by saying that it was OK for gays to be in the military, but that they shouldn't talk openly about it. This is known as the "Don't ask. Don't tell" policy. TOPIC: Do you believe that gays and lesbians have the right to serve in the military? Do you think that they should be able to be openly gay? Remember, you can choose one side or the other of the argument, or your thesis can be that you partially agree. |
