Jim Janko offers this introduction to his letter. "I have sometimes used letters to students to address issues of tolerance. To avoid propaganda, I make it clear that the opinions expressed are personal. Students have really appreciated letters."
Other teachers could use the letter below as it is with classes, or adapt it to suit them
and their students.
October 28, 1996 Dear Students, I want to give you my opinion of my country. The United States is beautiful. I love the forests and mountains of California. I love the desert. I love the rivers. I love nature. I like diversity. In San Francisco I have friends from Central America. I have friends from Vietnam. I have friends from China. I have friends from Africa. I learn many things from my friends. The United States has problems. Many rivers are not clean. Big companies cut down forests. Big companies often pollute the earth. Big companies often have too much money and power. In the United States, there is racism. There is prejudice against poor people. There is prejudice against people. There is prejudice against immigrants. I want peace and jusitce for all people. Your friend and teacher, Jim |
