DEMONSTRATION: I want all of the beginning students to sit in the two inside rows. 1. Everyone: Watch my tour of the Teaching Tolerance Website 2. Advanced: I will demonstrate one new program. You can practice the new program as your Independent Practice assignment. 3. Beginning: If you want to just practice what you learned last week (Mouse Practice and MacIntosh Tutorial), you can do that. I will also show you how to practice typing.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Advanced: Choose one of the following: 1. Look at the Teaching Tolerance website. In a group or alone, think of some ideas about what our class could contribute to the website. Examples: web design, writing, pictures (You can give me drawings or photographs and I can scan them in.) 2. Continue working with your group (from yesterday) or alone on the definition of "Tolerance" Write your definition. (2 or 3 sentences). Look in an English/English dictionary for a definition of "tolerance." How is your definition similar or different from the one in the dictionary? 3. Write a paragraph about a time in your life when you felt "different" or like you "didn't fit in." NOTE: The assignments above can be done on or off the computer so Beginners can work on those assignments too.
Beginners: I will demonstrate more about how to turn the computer on and off, and how to do very simple beginning steps on the computer. Note: After this class, I asked my students if they wanted more (or less structure) or if they wanted fewer choices. The students said that they wanted more structure. In the next session in the computer lab, I gave everyone, one very structured assignment to do (with variations for different levels). I would recommend choosing just one of the options above. I recycled topic #3 as a writing topic after viewing the first half of Simon Birch, which is a video lesson in the Heroes section of this website. In another session in the computer lab, one student chose to revise a short paper on the definition of Tolerance. See Student Writing |
