We find again and again in our classes at City College of San Francisco, our multicultural students provide us with numerous opportunities to reflect upon the rich similarities and differences amongst us all. Consequently many of us offer lessons that promote tolerance, justice, and a deeper appreciation of differences amongst ourselves and students.
Sometimes these lessons proceed from a poignant, peaceful awareness of our differences. Other times lessons arise from hostile histories or present day animosities amongst our class members or the larger community.
Some teachers feel great enthusiasm for learning and teaching lessons that foster tolerance and promote peace; others feel the subject is a daunting task which they hestitate to approach. Yet we all agree that students and teachers alike benefit in our classrooms and in our lives when we learn more about understanding each other. We need materials, ideas and resources to move forward.
We decided to create a collection of teaching resources and materials that we could share with each other in our department. We realize that, together, we have a rich variety of materials that have been tested in the classroom. Now it is time to share our materials, our vision and our voices.
As our project evolves, our website will serve as a collaborative resource for teachers and students. We envision that our project will help build a more inclusive society of remarkable individuals who participate fully and freely in all of society's endeavors. We welcome your materials and ideas.
We must be the change we want to see.
