Welcome to Beyond Tolerance, a collaborative web resource for educators, students, mentors, and anyone interested in learning and teaching how to build empathy and gain a better understanding and appreciation of our shared humanity.

This project was started over a decade ago by a small group of teachers at City College of San Francisco, where our diverse student population continues to provide us with numerous opportunities to reflect upon ways in which we can build a stronger, more inclusive community. These reflections have resulted in lessons that help promote tolerance, justice, and respect among our students and faculty. Sometimes these lessons proceed from a poignant awareness of our differences. Other times lessons arise from a history of hostility or present-day animosities among class members or the larger community.

Some teachers feel great enthusiasm for learning and teaching lessons that foster tolerance and promote peace; others feel the subject is a daunting task which they hesitate to approach. Yet we all agree that students and teachers alike benefit in their classrooms and in their lives when they learn more about understanding and respecting each other. We have collected materials, ideas and resources to help us move forward. Please join us in using and contributing to these resources, and help us share our materials, our vision and our voices with the broader community both locally and globally.
