Beginning High 4 Listening Promotion Test

This test contains 33 items. The time needed to complete this test is 45-60 minutes (about 30 minutes of actual test time plus set-up and explanation). All directions and examples for this test are included on the tape. This test contains three major parts:

Part 1: Questions 1-15. Students look at sentences, listen to a question, and choose the correct sentence. The directions students will hear on the tape for this section of the test:

Open your test booklets to the first page; page 1. You will hear a question. Read the four choices and decide which answer is correct. Mark your answers on the answer sheet. Each question will be said twice. You will now hear an example. Put your pencils down. Do not write down any answers. Listen to the question and read the choices.

a) A student.
b) Mary Smith
c) In San Francisco
d) 555-1234

Is the correct answer A, B, C, or D? The correct answer is B. If you have any questions, ask your teacher to stop the tape now. Pick up your pencils and find number 1 on the answer sheet. We will now begin the test.

Part 2: Questions 16-25. Students hear a short conversation proceeded and followed by a question. Students read the choices, and choose the correct answer. The directions students will hear on the tape for this section of the test:

You will hear short conversations between two speakers. Before and after you hear each conversation, you will hear a question. Listen to the conversation to answer the question. After you hear the question and conversation, read the three choices and choose the correct answer. You will hear each conversation only one time. You will now hear an example. Put your pencils down. Do not write down any answers.

Example:
Question: Why is the man upset?

Woman: Hi, Don, how are you doing?
Man: Not so good. My brother was in a car accident yesterday.
Woman: That's terrible! Is he okay?
Man: I think so. He's still in the hospital. He has a broken arm and he was cut up pretty badly.
Woman: I'm sorry to hear that.

Question: Why is the man upset?

a) His sister is in the hospital
b) His son is in the hospital
c) His brother is in the hospital

Is the correct answer A, B, C or D? The correct answer is C. If you have any questions, ask your teacher to stop the tape now. Pick up your pencils and find number 16 on your answer sheet. We will now continue the test.

Part 3: Questions 26-33. Students look at pictures and hear four sentences. They then choose the correct sentence. The directions students will hear on the tape for this section of the test:

You will look at the picture and listen to the four sentences about the picture. Choose the correct sentence. Each sentence will be said only once. Look at the example picture. Put your pencils down. Listen to the four sentences. Do not write any answers.

X1: Which sentence is correct?
a) The man is sitting next to the sofa.
b) Several men are sitting on the sofa.
c) The man is relaxing on the sofa.
d) There's a coffee table in front of the sofa.

Is the correct answer A, B, C, or D? The correct answer is C. If you have any questions, ask your teacher to stop the tape now. Pick up your pencils and find number 26 on your answer sheet. We will now continue the test.
