Using Online Job Listings: The Information You Can Find

TALK ABOUT IT
What kind of information can you find in a job listing?

READ ABOUT IT
Job listings contain the same basic information. The important information to look for includes:
  1. The job title
  2. The date the job was posted (It is important to look at the most recent jobs first.)
  3. A description of the duties and responsibilities of the job
  4. The requirements and qualifications you need for the job
  5. The work schedule
  6. The salary or wages and benefits
  7. How to apply for the job
  8. Information about the company
Some listings are organized with headings and some are spread out in paragraphs where it is more difficult to find the information you need. Some give very detailed lists of duties and requirements; others don’t give much information about the job at all. You can see the information in the example below.

HOW TO DO IT
When you read a job listing, you need to scan it to find the information you want. Scanning means you move your eyes quickly across each line. You look for words that are related to the information you want. For example, if you are looking for the work schedule, you might see the words hours or shifts.

Browsing: Finding the best keywords

One of the most useful things you can do in your online job search is to browse for keywords. When you begin your online job search, it’s a good idea to find out which words give you the job listings you want. It’s like window-shopping. You’re not looking for jobs to apply for yet; you’re just seeing which words work the best.

Test different words for job titles (custodian), industries (building and grounds maintenance), and skills (mopping).
  • If you get too many jobs, your search is too general. You need to use more specific words.
  • If you don’t get very many jobs, you need to use more general words.
  • If you don’t get any jobs or the wrong kinds of jobs, you need to use different words.
You can also find useful vocabulary for other job search documents, like your resume by browsing. You can find out what employers are looking for in job candidates. What are the requirements for the job? What are the usual job duties or responsibilities? What qualities do you need for the job? What is the average salary for the job?
