In the past, many people thought that looking at newspaper ads or just walking into companies were the best ways to find jobs. Nowadays, job seekers spend most of their online job search time looking for job listings. But did you know that many jobs (perhaps as many as 75 - 80%) are never advertised in the newspaper or on the Internet? This is the often called the hidden job market.
So how do employers find employees for these jobs if they donít advertise them? And how can you find out about these jobs if they are not advertised?
Actually, employers often do advertise for new jobs, but only inside their companies because it is cheaper and faster. They look to their employees to tell them about people they know who are looking for jobs, and their employees make referrals.
That is why networking or word of mouth is still the best way to find a job. You need to talk to people! It is also why you should not use only the Internet for your job search. Experts recommend that you do not spend more than 25% of your job search time on the Internet. It is important to use many different ways to look for a job. And, of course, you still need to make phone calls and meet people face-to-face.
The Internet has become a powerful tool for both job seekers and employers. It has also become the main way for job seekers to apply for jobs and for employers and job seekers to communicate. So remember that the Internet is a useful resource for your job search, but that it is only one method of looking for a job.
