Spam, a term for any unsolicited email covers not just annoying messages containing ads, but:
- messages containing viruses
- fraudulent requests for money: from the famous Nigerian "419" messages (named after the section of Nigerian law that they violate), to recent tsunami relief scams)
- "phishing" - attempts to get you to send information about your bank accounts, credit cards, passwords, etc. Reports on the latest scams, as well as a history are on the AntiPhishing web site, under the Archive link.
- spyware: programs that load themselves into your computer to pop up ads even when you're not online, or to gather information about your browsing/buying habits, or even to trap your keystrokes as you type in confidential information
CCSF has a SPAM filter that requires regular but minimal attention from you. The Barracuda Spam filter performs several actions:
Constantly updates an artificial intelligence agent that sorts mail into four categories:
- Definitely Spam/Virus: Not allowed through system
- Likely to be Spam: Sent to your Quarantine area for you to review/delete/allow
- Maybe Spam: Tagged with [BULK] in Subject, then sent to Mailbox
- Not Spam: Sent to Mailbox

Companies eager to tighten up their information security perimeters should focus not on technology but on teaching their employees how to say 'no' says Keven Mitnick, ex-hacker who
led the FBI on a 15-year manhunt that ended when his 1995 capture put him behind bars for nearly four years. He was referred to in security circles as
"Osama bin Mitnick". Read his comments from a conference in Australia. |
