Course Specifics:

Course Begins: begins August 23, 2008 (face to face orientation required)
Location: Visual Arts V142
Face-to-Face meetings take place on some Saturdays, otherwise students collaborate and work online.
Meeting times: 10:00 AM–2:00 PM
Prerequisite(s): There are no prerequisites for this course.

Both should be available in the CCSF Bookstore, but you might be able to order them online. If you order them online do know that we will start with the Visual Intelligence book right away, so you will need the books rather quickly.

Course Content:

* Visual Intelligence & Literacy examined from various angles, including culture
* Design Principles & Elements (including simple exercises to explore the principles)
* Visual Mapping as a learning tool and a tool to organize information
* Sketching as a tool to coordinate eye-mind-hand, as well as a tool for ideation
* Stimulating creativity
* Developing teams
* Virtual communication practices

Meetings:

Online
* Team work
* Discussions of content and activities
* Weekly synthesis

Face-to-Face (F2F)
* Team work
* Discussions of content (interactive, no lectures)
* In-class activities (interactive project based learning)
* Midterm and final exams

Tests

Midterm and final exams conducted as interactive team activities during F2F meetings
Quizzes throughout

Evaluation

* 25% Attendance
(15% online and 10% face-to-face, quantitative)
* 35% Participation
(25% online tasks completed and ON TIME!!! and 10% face-to-face interaction and preparedness for class, qualitative)
* 25% Sketch book
(quantitative, organization of assignments)
* 5% Midterm exam
* 10% Final exam

Materials:

* Details depend on students' interests, here some sources: art/design supply stores
* Drawing materials (set of pencils—soft/medium/hard, kneadable eraser, pencil sharpener, pens—different sizes of tips)
* A roll of tracing paper (white)
* Big sketchbook (wire spine so you can fold pages over, size 11 x 14—you may need two)
* Glue stick
* X-acto knife with extra blades and scissors
* Mr. Sketch mapping markers (lots of colors but more black ones, thick marker tips)
