Course Information

Course Description: This hands-on course covers QuickBooks, a complete computerized accounting system for small businesses. Topics include a review of basic accounting concepts, preparation of business reports and graphs, and the creation of and accounting for a company using QuickBooks. Students will gain experience creating business documents and managing customer and vendor files, inventory, payroll and bank accounts.

Required Text: Computer Accounting, with QuickBooks Pro 2009;
11th Edition
; Donna Ulmer ; ISBN: 0077330706 . The text can be purchased at the CCSF Bookstore or online.

Required Software: QuickBooks Pro 2009 for Microsoft Windows.
A trial version of QuickBooks Pro 2009 comes with your textbook.
Do not purchase a textbook without the trial version of QuickBooks Pro 2009. The trial version expires 140 days after installation. Do not install the trial version of QuickBooks Pro 2009 until asked to do so in class.

 

Computer Labs at CCSF: QuickBooks Pro 2009 is not available on campus computers. However, there are computers labs available on campus for other computing needs.

Students enrolled in Business Department courses may use the Business Department Computer Lab located in Cloud Hall 111.

Students may also use the Academic Computer Lab in the Rosenberg Library.  Visit the Learning Assistance Center (R207) for information and lab hours.

 
Class Content and Requirements
This online section of ACCT 57, opens on Tuesday, August 18 at 8:00 p.m. This course covers Chapters 1 through 12 of the required textbook. This course also requires the completion of 5 QuickBooks projects. Online students should expect to spend 9 hours per week completing coursework.
 
Class Orientation: A class orientation is provided online in the class material and is required reading for all students. The online class orientation familiarizes students with what is expected for successful completion of the class. Points are awarded for completion of the online orientation.
There is not a face-to-face orientation.
 

Readings: The reading assignments are a critical element of this course. Success in all class activities depends on completing the text and additional readings. You must carefully read and follow the software directions in each chapter of the text.

 

Exercises and Quizzes: Most chapters have required exercises. The exercises focus on learning and reinforcing basic and advanced concepts. All chapters have multiple choice quizzes that are based on the successful completion of chapter readings and assignments.

 

Forums and Glossary Collaboration: Forum topics will be primarily student initiated and are required weekly. During the first part of the semester the class will create a Glossary. The objective of the Glossary creation is to enhance student understanding of terms introduced throughout the class.

 
Projects: This class requires the completion of four projects and a final exam project. Each project tests your knowledge of QuickBooks and your ability to interpret and record transactions.
 

Exams: There are two computerized multiple choice exams. The Midterm Exam covers the QuickBooks activities and concepts included in the first nine chapters of the text. The Final Exam covers the QuickBooks activities and concepts included in all chapters of the text.

 
Student Responsibilities

Enrollment: The instructor will contact enrolled students before 8:00 pm on Friday, August 14 to confirm class status. Enrolled students who have not signed into class by 8:00 pm on Friday, August 28 will be dropped from the class. If a student wants to drop the class during the semester, it is the student's responsibility to do so. A student not officially dropping this class may receive a failing grade.

 

Grading: The class grading scale is based on 1,000 available points. Points are awarded for completion of quizzes, projects, participation in class forums, and other online activities. Points are not awarded for all of the activities that are required for this class. However, success in the class depends on completion of all of the assigned activities. No extra credit will be given.

 
Late Assignments: This is not a self-paced class. Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner. Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are due by the date and time shown on the due date list provided in class.
 
Online Etiquette: Please treat others in this course with the same level of respect that you would like to be treated. I suggest you read the information provided on the CCSF online class homepage regarding online etiquette. I expect all students to use proper online etiquette in this class.
 

Academic Conduct: Students are encouraged to work together to solve problems. However, each student must complete his own work. CCSF requires that the submission of all class assignments represent the original work of the student. Potential problems can be avoided if the rules set forth in the CCSF Student Code of Conduct are followed.
