Anthropology 2 Extra Credit Guidelines, Fall 2009

Anthropology 2: Intro. to Archaeology and Prehistory
Kennedy / Fall 2009 / Tuesday-Thursday 9:30 to 11 am
Instructor: Matthew Kennedy

GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA CREDIT

Extra credit in Anthropology 2 is designed to give students the opportunity to explore a topic of interest in greater depth. The project is conceived and created by the student, with guidance and suggestions provided by the instructor. Ideas:

1.) Analysis of the discovery, excavation, geology, artifacts found and significance of a particular site. This could be any site, from the famous and epic Machu Picchu, Pompeii, or Stonehenge to the small scale discovery of an encampment, burial ground, etc.

2.) Report on a particular era in prehistory. What are the distinguishing characteristics of the various eras of the early Paleolithic, late Paleolithic, Mesolithic?

3.) Report on the current arguments on the arrival(s) and settlement of the first Americans in the New World. Look at the arguments and evidence supporting various times for the arrival.

4.) Look at some aspect of archaeology as it was practiced in the early part of the twentieth century. You could report on an early expedition, for example, or early theories of human development and the debate between science and religion surrounding human origin.

5.) You could do a book report on a subject within archaeology. If a particular subject interests you, for example, check the bibliographies of the textbooks.

6.) Follow-up research related to the class fieldtrip to the Northwest Information Center and the Anthropological Studies Center at Sonoma State University.

7.) Another idea? Let's talk about it.

The extra credit paper should be 4 pages minimum typed double spaced. Maps, photos, graphs, etc. are encouraged, but they cannot substitute for written pages. Deadline is Thursday, December 10. No exceptions! These papers will require multiple sources - one source is not enough unless you are doing a single book report. Internet sources must be accompanied by published sources. No wikipedia! As with the regular essays, written sources should be cited using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format.

Grading - Extra credit papers replace the lowest test or essay grade of the semester, excluding the final. Extra credit essays are graded on contents and the strength of your presentation (i.e. appropriate examples, vocabulary, reasonable conclusions drawn, etc.). Also, time permitting, papers could be presented to class using slides, video, overhead projections, power point, etc.

Additional Five Point Extra Credit Opportunity

Earn five points extra credit toward your course grade by attending one of City College's library workshops anytime this semester. They are offered both live and online, and the in person workshops take 50 minutes. You must turn in the verification slip of attendance for credit. For a complete schedule of workshops, visit http://www.ccsf.edu/Library/instruct/workshops.html/
