Anthropology 3 Test #2 Study Guide, Fall 2011

The test is scheduled for Friday, October 21 during class time. Bring a #2 pencil; scantron forms will be provided. Test is composed of 20 multiple choice and 20 true-false questions. In addition, there five kinship diagrams each worth 2 points.

Reading: Bonvillain, chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

History of anthropology: Edward Tylor, Lewis Henry Morgan

Kinship: unilineal descent (matrilineal and patrilineal), bilateral descent (cognatic), Eskimo, Hawaiian, and Iroquois kinshp terms, contemporary descent in the US, clans, kindreds, totems, ego, patriarchy, patrilineal, matriarchy, matrilineal, parallel and cross cousins, consanguines and affines

Marriage: motivations for marriage, monogamy, polygamy (polygyny and polyandry), patterns of endogamy and exogamy, the Tiwi, tensions in an Iraqi household, functions of same-sex marriage, homophilic and pathic same-sex marriage, the AAA and same-sex marriage, the Na of China, the Dine, the Nuer ghost marriage

Subsistence: subsistence strategies (pastoralism, horticulture, agriculture, foraging), enculturation, materialism in nomadic and sedentary societies

Exchange and Economics: balanced, generalized, and negative reciprocity, state governments and redistribution through taxes, children and economic contribution in non-industrial nations

Films: Dance and Trance of Balinese Children, The Lau of Malaita
