Field Experience 2012

Field Experience Coordinator:  Lisa Yamashiro, MEd, RD

The field experience provides hands-on experience at various public health and nutrition care settings such as Women,Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Programs, Head Start, senior nutrition programs, University of California Cooperative Extension, and hospitals.  Students learn and practice entry-level job-specific skills and competencies in the delivery of nutrition care and services under the supervision of registered dietitians.

March 21 - June 22, 2012, 2 days equivalent/week (total 160 hours minimum)

PREREQUISITES

Completion of courses HOEC 98, 99, 100, 104, and 105*, each with a grade of C or higher.  (*HOEC 105 is a two-part course)

TB clearance is required of all students.  Depending on site, fingerprint clearance or other vaccines may also be required. Costs incurred are the student's responsibility.

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS
  • Schedule:  Courses HOEC 104 & HOEC 105 will end on Thursday, April 12, 2012. The off-campus field experience is scheduled from April 16 to June 22, any two-day equivalent per week combination depending on site. 

  • Tech-Enhanced Learning:  While students are placed at geographically dispersed internship sites, they will maintain communication and collaboration with classmates and CCSF Field Experience Coordinator through Insight (Moodle) online course management system.  Insight Login Page (link). Students will post individual Weekly Learning Summaries on Insight and create a final project, "The Learning Journey", an online presentation to document their field experience to be posted for class viewing and feedback.  Insight will also be used for discussion forums and email communication.  

  • Nutrition Clinics:  In addition to the main field experience placement, all NA students (in pairs) will rotate one day through CCSF Student Health Center for a nutrition counseling experience under the supervision of faculty RDs Teresa Leu or Frances Chan. Nutrition Clinics at the Student Health Center will be scheduled on either a Monday or Wednesday from March 21 - May 21, 2012. 

  • Field Experience Sites:  Field experience sites include public health agencies (San Francisco, Alameda, & San Mateo Counties), WIC clinics, UC Cooperative Extension, Second Harvest Food Bank, senior nutrition and home-delivered meals programs, Head Start, Children's Council of San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District - Nutrition Education Project.
