| Course description: A three unit beginning French course, focusing on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and comprehension.
Objectives: To acquire a working knowledge of basic French grammar, vocabulary and syntax, to understand simple written texts, to pronounce French with a good accent, to understand French spoken at a normal speed, to acquire an understanding of aspects of Francophone culture.
Course content: Chapters 1 - 3 of Allons-y! and the corresponding workbook chapters. Major grammar topics are verbs in the present tense, definite and indefinite articles, adjectival agreement, possessive adjectives, prepositions. Major vocabulary areas are greetings and getting to know people, ordering food, nationalities and professions, likes and dislikes, sports and activities, family members, places in town, giving directions.
Instructional method: Classroom time is used for acquiring and practicing new structures and vocabulary. Homework is assigned at each class meeting and due the following. In addition to written homework, two hours per week in the Language Center (Library 205) are required. Fit them into your schedule as convenient. Keep the attendance card issued by the Language Center; I will collect them periodically.
Attendance policy: Five points per day for class participation. If you need to miss a class it is understood that you do what it takes not to fall behind.
Grading: There is a total of 730 points for the course.
Three chapter tests and one final, 100 points each 400

Final grade scale: 90 – 100% A; 80 – 89% B; 70 – 79% C; 60 – 69% C.
