Online Student Information, Spring 2011

Abnormal Psychology (PSYC10)

The PSYC 10 Online syllabus for Spring 2011 is not yet available; however, you can get a good sense of how the course is set up by looking at the Fall 2010 syllabus on this website.

Are you ready to learn online?

Online courses offer students considerable flexibility; however, it is very important to be aware that this course has weekly deadlines which must be followed.  Failure to take quizzes and exams, complete discussion postings, or submit reports by the deadline dates will result in zero points for those assignments and there is no provision for making up these assignments after the deadline. I did a survey at the end of last semester and determined that students who got A level grades in the course reported spending approximately 8 hours per week for the various tasks required for succes in the course. It is important to realize that this time muct be put in each week because of all the weekly deadlines.

It is also important to note that college level reading and writing skills are required for success in this course.  All of the quizzes and exams in the course will consist of timed multiple-choice questions which can be very tricky and difficult if a student's English reading level is inadequate.  Also, grammar and spelling will be taken into account in grading the discussion board postings and reports.

Basic computer and internet skills are also required.  If you have not taken an online course before, you may find it helpful to take this short quiz to test your readiness for online learning.

Course Information:

You will be sent a welcome message to the course just prior to the first day of instruction which is January 18.  You should be prepared to log in to the course on January 18th.  Failure to log in will result in your being dropped from the course so that students on the wait list can be added.

Wait List:  Once the course is fully enrolled, a wait list will be created and students will automatically be added to the course if anyone drops the course prior to the first day of instruction.  Students will be notified by Admissions that they have been added to the course.  Be aware, however, that enrollment in an on campus section of PSYC 10 will automatically remove students from the wait list.

To get on the wait list you need to try and add the course even though the system indicates that the course is closed.  You will then be offerred the option of getting on the wait list.  The wait list only accepts a total of 25 students; however, if the wait list is closed when you try to get on it, be aware that it may open up again at some future date whenever someone currently on the list gets added to the course.

Orientation for the course is online.  Course begins on January 18th and students should be ready to log in on that date. Log in site:  http://insight.ccsf.edu.

Textbook: See the syllabus forthe required textbook which will be the same as the one used for the Fall 2010 semester.
