BASIC SWIMMING SAFETY GUIDELINES

FOLLOW THESE BASIC SAFETY TIPS WHENEVER YOU SWIM IN A BODY OF WATER (POOLS, LAKES, PONDS, RIVERS OR OCEANS).

Never swim alone

Swim only in supervised areas

Never drink alcohol or use drugs when you are swimming.  Alcohol impares judgement, balance and coordination; affects swimming skills and reduces the body's ability to stay warm

Always check the depth before entering the water

Always enter feetfirst if you do not know the depth

Do not swim in a pool if you cannot see the bottom or if the water is cloudy

Know your swimming limits and stay within them

Watch out for the "dangerous TOOs" - too tired, too far from safety, too much sun and too much strenous activity

Stay out of the water when you are overheated or overtired

Do not chew gum or eat while you swim; you could easily choke

Learn how to dive safely

Use common sense about swimming after eating.  In general, you do not have to wait an hour after eating before you may safely swim.

Rules taken from "Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety", 2004
