CLASS DESCRIPTION:
This course is for students who wish to workout and improve the basic four swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). Students can perform self pacd lap swimming or follow a workout comprised of warm-up, various drills, workout sets and warm-down.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
(1) Each student will develop or improve thier skills in the four competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). (2) In addition, all students will demonstrate an improvement in their swim strength and endurance.
CLASS PROCEDURES
Students must bring PICTURED STUDENT ID to use the pool. Swimmers must shower before entering pool area. Swimmers will enter the pool area and check-in by supplying their student ID cards to the Instructor on duty. No street shoes will be allowed in the pool area. Workouts will be posted for students or swimmers may swim their own workouts. An Intructor will be available to assist with workout questions and swimming drills/tips. Upon completion of the swim, students will retrieve their student ID cards from the instructor and leave the pool area.
SWIM ATTIRE AND EQUIPMENT
Swimming suit, towel, swim goggles, swim cap. No t-shirts, shorts or cut-offs will be allowed in the pool. Pool sandals will be allowed.
EVALUATION
PE 253 is graded on a PASS/NO PASS basis. All CCSF Credit students are required to swim at total of 25 swims to receive the 2-UNIT "PASS" grade; a minimum of 30 minutes of active swimming is required per session. 13 sessions is a recommended goal for the first midterm period. It is your responsibility to drop classes or take a leave of absence if you can no longer attend the class. Only in extreme circumstances will an 'incomplete grade' be given. Community Service students will participate and not receive college credit for the class.
Health Concerns
All swimmers who have health problems affecting their physical performance in this swimming class must inform the instructor. A physical examination is recommended for anyone who has not recently participated in routine physical activity/physical fitness program.
POOL RULES
The pool is open to PE 253 students on a dropin basis during the posted hours only. Any student disrupting the class may be asked to leave. All procedures set forth in the CCSF Rules of Student Conduct will be enforced and appropriate remedial and/or disciplinary steps will be take when violations occur. Any student not in compliance with the pool rules will not be allowed to swim. In an event of an emergency, please follow instuctions provided by the Lifeguards and Instructor.
Non compliance with the following rules may result in explusion from the pool/class. These rules include, but are not limited to:
You may enter the water if the Instructor or Lifeguard is on deck.
Only students, faculty and staff properly enrolled in PE 253 for the current semester will be allowed to swim.
No shoes allowed on deck.
No 'deck' changes are permitted. Pool users are expected to use available changing facilities.
NO DIVING OR JUMPING INTO THE WATER.
All swimmers must shower before entering the pool.
No food or drink (except for water in plastic) will be allowed on the pool deck
Swimmers must wear appriopriate swim wear (see above-swim attire)
Be aware of your belongings. Avoid wearing jewelry. Do not bring valuables to class.
No cell phones will be allowed near the pool area. Please continue with calls on the bleachers.
Swimmers will follow proper swimming protocol regarding swimming etiquette.
All swimmers will swim in appropriate speed lanes and use proper swimming etiquette with other swimmers. Abide by procedures for big lane and shallow water.
Equipment that may interfere or injure other swimmers will not be allowed. Use of water aerobic equipment is not allowed.
Water running, water aerobic exercises are NOT allowed, the pool will only be available for lap swimming.
DAY USE LOCKERS
Lockers in the PE Locker rooms are available for DAY USE ONLY. Lockers will not be individually assigned. Bring your own lock, Day use lockers will be available from 6:00AM to 10:00PM. After 10:00pm all locks will be cut off. If a lock is cut off contents will be held for 2 weeks. To retrieve contents students will caled (415)452-7638 for policy information.
Registering for class
You can register as a CCSF student by
-going to WWW.CCSF.EDU and complete the pre-registration process. This is a 2-Unit class with a Credit/No Credit grading policy (before the first day of class) - OR
-you can register for this class through the COMMUNITY SERVICES (or Community Education section of CCSF) WWW.CCSF.EDU/continEd after approval from the instructor. Registering this way does not provide college credit and is for students who would like to repeat a class after reaching the maximum repeatabilty or by members of the community who do not need college credit. -All first time students need to attend an Orientation time and add the class at that time.
