What is the Writing Success Project?

The Writing Success Project (WSP) is the local name for CCSF's Student Support Services (SSS) project.  SSS is a division of TRIO, the US Department of Education's program for college students who qualify on the basis of income, parent education, and/or disability.

CCSF has had a SSS project since 1980.  Earlier versions of the project had other names-- the CAP Grant, Cap Special Services, and the CAP Writing Center.  Earlier versions of the grant also included different services, including short-term courses in ESL Reading, Listening and Vocabulary and English 9 (Reading Skills), workshops in ESL and developmental writing skills, individual tutoring, counseling and courses in editing.

Past SSS directors have included April Showers (Foothill College) and Laura Walsh (CCSF ESL department).  Past instructors have included Jim Whearty (now at Foothill College), Valerie Berger (CCSF ESL department), Pam Altman (SFSU English) and Gregory Proulx (relocating to Spain in Summer 2005).

The currently funded project has a new focus for Fall 2005--Supplemental Instruction groups attached to designated English and ESL composition courses at CCSF.  WSP tutors will attend class and meet each week with groups of WSP students.  WSP groups will offer a regular time to work on writing skills, in the context of a specific course.  Together, students will discuss reading assignments, work on outlines or drafts, and accomplish tasks that will lead to the project goal---success in composition class, and ultimately, degrees from CCSF or eventual transfer to baccalaureate institutions.
