Elements of Public Speaking, is a three unit hybrid online class. A majority of the class takes place online and students are required to attend five on-campus meetings including a mandatory orientation. According to the 2008/09 City College of San Francisco Catalogue, Speech 1A features Training in the collection of material; organization and delivery of extemporaneous speeches. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, audience analysis, organizational development, language, and using technology in presentations. Speech 1A fulfills the Communication and Analytical Thinking graduation requirement for an Associates Degree from CCSF. Speech 1A is transferable as an elective to the UC System. Speech 1A fulfills the Oral Communication, Area A, requirement for the CSU System. Speech 1A is an IGETC course. As always, please double check your individual prerequisite, transfer and graduation requirements with your CCSF counselor. Credit/No Credit is available.
No matter how nervous you are about giving a public speech, you are not alone. Chances are you know that speaking effectively in public is of paramount importance. The skills you learn in Speech 1A can be used in academics, business, industry, and other professional/social/family settings. The better we are at communicating publicly the more we can bring success to our home, work, and school lives. Not surprisingly, regardless of our profession, major, or lifestyle, we will find ourselves being asked to speak in public. Sometimes we are able to choose the situations, sometimes we are not. Speaking in public can be one of the greatest parts of living on this planet! We can feel a sense of belonging and our life given new meaning. After all, who doesn’t feel satisfied when his/her voice is heard? These are just a few reasons that Elements of Public Speaking can be one of the most enjoyable and practical classes you will ever take.
