Alma Avila is the Community Health Worker (CHW) Program Coordinator. Alma joined City College as a part-time instructor in 2001 and became a full-time instructor and CHW Program Coordinator in 2005. Alma is responsible for the coordination of the CHW program and teaches Health 45: AIDS the Epidemic, the core CHW courses Health 60, Health 62, Health 61 and Health 63. She also teaches health 25, Women’s Health Issues. The focus of the section of H25 and in collaboration with the Latino/a Service Center looks at those issues that impact Latina Women’s health and well-being including, how culture, traditional gender roles, environmental factors, and racism affect her health.

Alma has extensive experience and knowledge in community based program development and implementation. She has over 20 years experience in community organizing, health education, research, and has focused on working primarily with underserved populations and on social justice issues. She frequently presents at conference and conducts presentations and workshops. She was a program manager with the San Francisco Department of Public Health Tobacco Free Project for over 7 years where she provided technical assistance, training, and development to funded projects. She also serves on a number of community and advisory boards and is an elected member to her son's school board in San Francisco. Alma has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Golden Gate University in San Francisco and received her MPH (Master in Public Health) from San Jose State University in San Jose California.
