GIS

The ATTE Center at City College of San Francisco is adept at being the only community college in the Bay Area to recognize the importance of the Geospatial Industry and provide professional training to the community. The GIS Education Center at the ATTE Center at City College of San Francisco officially opened in January 2005. Despite the growth of technology in the Bay Area there is a lack of customized training for various industries using GIS for industry specific purposes.

The process of networking with GIS professional organizations, interviews with GIS professionals in the private sector and public agencies led us to the development of customized GIS courses for several industries. The need for customized classes for the transportation industry was the most apparent. The students in our first class for GIS and Transportation include city planners, municipal engineers, transportation managers and transportation advocacy groups all with a specific need for GIS training for their work projects. The class is full to capacity with a waiting list for the next section.

The goals of the GIS Education center are to understand the future trends of GIS and to increase the competencies of professionals and help them achieve their career goals. Our future course development projects include workforce and economic development, public safety, health and economic gardening.

The GIS Education Center at The City College Evans campus offers state-of-the-art technology and software including ESRI ArcGIS and Oracle Spatial. For more information see www.ccsf.edu/gis.
