CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO TO LEAD NEW AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM

On May 2, 2006 City College of San Francisco along with Chabot College, College of Marin, Contra Costa College and five ROP sites were awarded $450,000 to establish a regional, two-year, youth-oriented automotive training program. The Bay Area Automotive Education Partnership will reach-out to high school and college students and educate them regarding the growing employment opportunities in the automotive world. Beginning in high school and proceeding to post-secondary school, BAAEP will increase the number of high school students who enroll in and complete career pathway classes that will help students develop core skills for future careers in Advanced Transportation Technologies.

The President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative has identified the automotive industry in general, and employment as automotive technicians and mechanics in particular, as high-growth, high demand jobs in an economically vital sector of the U.S. Economy.

The automotive industry is one of the largest industries in the United States and in California the growth rate in this sector is projected at 22% from 2002-2012. California is also projected to produce 3,700 new jobs in the automotive sector each year.

“We’re going to provide students with very valuable, real-world skills that they can take into the automotive industry,” said CCSF Project Director Suzanne Korey. “Our studies have shown that of the 3,700 new automotive jobs that will be produced in California each year, 360 of those jobs will be in the Bay Area.”
