City College of San Francisco is the largest multi-campus single district community college in the state of California.  City College was established in 1935 to meet the educational needs of the San Francisco community.  City College offers Credit and Noncredit classes at nine campuses and over 100 sites throughout the city of San Francisco.  The nine City College campuses and their locations are:  Alemany (located in the Tenderloin);  John Adams (Western Addition / Haight/Ashbury); Castro / Valencia; Chinatown / North Beach; Downtown; Evans (India Basin / Bayview); Mission; Southeast (Bayview / Hunter’s Point); and the main campus at Phelan (Ocean View / Merced / Ingleside).

City College offers courses in 150 academic and vocational programs to help meet both students’ and community needs.  The college confers Associate of Arts and Science degrees and grants Certificates of Completion to students enrolled in our vocational programs.  City College's innovative educational programs are designed to:  help students meet their general education requirements for four-year colleges and universities; prepare students for employment; remove educational deficiencies; or receive other special preparation.
 

STUDENT ENROLLMENT

City College serves over 91,000 students annually (Summer, Fall and Spring terms combined).
Almost 85% of our Credit students and over 93% of our Noncredit students in Fall 1996 lived in San Francisco.  Outside of San Francisco, our second largest source of students live in nearby San Mateo county (9.3% of our Credit and 4.1% of our Noncredit students in Fall 1996).

Students enrolling at City College of San Francisco can take Credit or Noncredit courses, or enroll in courses offered through our Contract Education, Continuing Education, or the Institute for International Students programs.

Ethnicity
The total student enrollment (Credit and Noncredit combined) for the Fall 1996 term was 57,011.
As the chart below shows, City College of San Francisco has an ethnically diverse student body in both Credit and Noncredit programs and courses.

Gender
In the Fall 1996 term,  the majority of our students enrolled in both Credit and Noncredit courses and programs were women.  Over 61% of our Noncredit students enrolled during the Fall 1996 term were women.  Some of our Noncredit courses and programs such as Family Studies, Licensed Vocational Nursing, and Consumer Education have historically enrolled a higher percentage of women.

Age
Over 60% of our Credit students enrolled in the Fall 1996 semester were under 30 years old.  The 20-24 age group comprised the largest group of students enrolled in Credit courses (over 27%).  Many students enrolled in Credit courses have the goal to transfer to a four-year college or university and tend to be younger.  On the other hand, over 55% of our Noncredit students are 40 years or older.  City College offers many Noncredit courses and programs which appeal to older adults.
