Frequently Asked Questions

When can I choose self evaluation?
Regular full-time faculty can choose self evaluation once every six years (9.C.4.1.6). Part-time instructors can choose self evaluation only after two satisfactory evaluations without a break in service, and then only once every 18 semesters (9.E.1.1)
I chose self evaluation -- why do I still have evaluators assigned?
Two reasons:
  1. The evaluators will conduct the student evaluations, as applicable.
  2. Your self evaluation requires peer review.
I'm a new department chair -- what are some key points for me to know?
Early in the term you'll get a form from us that shows which of your faculty we think is subject to evaluation this term. Verify this list against your own records and return to us.

Later in the term you'll get another form where you'll get to identify the evaluation teams for those faculty under evaluation this term. When completing this form, keep the following in mind:

  • Ensure that evaluators are able to conduct direct observations and administer student evaluations within the boundaries of their own schedule
  • Tenured, and tenure-track faculty in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year are obligated, if needed, to serve as evaluators two times each year. (9.C.4.2.1)
  • Normally, no faculty member may serve as an evaluator for a faculty member and also be evaluated by that same faculty member in the same semester. (9.C.4.2.2.1)
  • Do not inform evaluation teams until the disqualification period for evaluators has passed. (9.C.4.2.2)

Finally, please be mindful of the evaluation calendar, and encourage faculty in your department to complete the aspects of the evaluation process in a timely manner.

What are the rules about disqualifying evaluation team members?
Evaluatees have the right, within three days of being notified of their evaluation team, of making three disqualifications from those originally selected. Send disqualifications in writing to Tom Boegel, Mailbox C308. (9.C.4.2.2)
What's the difference between peer and peer/management evaluation?
If you choose peer/management evaluation, you are requesting a management employee or designee to be on your evaluation team. (9.C.4.3)
