Pina Rakholia

Pina Rakholia

My name is Pina Rakholia, and I came to San Diego from India three years and five months ago. I enrolled at North City-Miramar ESL program from level one, then two, three, four, five, six and reached level seven! While attending the advanced level classes, I also worked part time as an ESL teacher aide and student mentor.

My dream is to be a Registered Nurse. When I was in level 7, my counselor suggested I may be ready to start a nursing assistant program and so I applied to a Nurse Assistant class in a local ROP program. I did very well in my class. I was the only student who received three awards: The Outstanding Student Award, theAward of Competency, and the Award of Excellence. I demonstrated professionalism and good work ethic by having perfect attendance in my clinical class. I studied really hard for the Certified Nursing Assistant State Exam, and as a result, I passed!! However, I believed in myself and I'm very proud of myself because when I came to United States, I couldn't speak, read or write English. I promised myself that I would make it. It was hard for me, but I didn't give up.

My next step is to enter a LVN program, and then a RN program at a local community college. I want to thank all North City Miramar's ESL teachers who helped improve my English and who have made a big impact on my life. I feel that if I hadn't met these teachers and counselor, then my life would have been very different. This is very big change in my life. When I was in India I was in a small town, and I would not have had these opportunities. I am so happy - my dream is coming true!
