I am a community college graduate who will be transferring to a four year college in the fall. I began taking classes at Lassen Community College while I was in high school. By doing so, I increased my awareness of the importance of a higher education; before then I never really thought about going to college. No one in my family had ever graduated from college or for that matter, high school. I set a goal to become the first in my family to graduate from college and I did!

As a foster child who aged-out of the foster care system, I have set goal to become an advocate for disadvantaged youth and will do so by majoring in psychology and political science. I feel all youth need help and guidance to realize their potential, but especially foster youth like myself, who need it more.

Community college has changed my life in astonishing ways. I learned to become a leader by becoming involved in student government, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), and AmeriCorps. I served as ASB President, PTK Historian, and a mentor to foster youth as an AmeriCorps member. If it were not for community college I would have never realized or developed my skills as a leader or recognized my potential.

Education is the key to success and empowerment. Don’t take it away by continuing to cut out much needed monies or by increasing fees. Everyone deserves a chance to realize their full potential!
