Monday, November 2

6:00pm Kickoff of "Community College Week" at Yerba Buena Gardens Terrace, San Francisco, California. Invited speakers will be the State Chancellor and Board of Governors, our local Trustees and Chancellor, student leaders, and locally elected officials, including the Board of Supervisors, the Mayor, State Legislators and Federal congressional representatives.

Wednesday, November 4

11:00 – 2:00pm Free classes offered to the public at Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco, California. "Final exams" represented by signing a petition, calling a legislator, and registering to vote.

  • Noon—Learning the Principles of Physics: Instant Ice Cream. David Yee. Circle 1, Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade.
  • Noon—Sketchbook Drawing. Diana Olivier. Ohlone Circle, Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade.

  • 12:30 – 2:00pm—The World Premiere of Earth Tones. Lecture/Demonstration will feature insight into the communication between composer and performer and the rigorous preparation to bring a work of this complexity to the concert stage. Composer: Lenny Carlson. Pianist: Virtuoso Frederick Harris. Creative Arts Building, Room 133, City College of San Francisco Ocean Campus, 50 Phelan Avenue, San Francisco, California.

7:00pm Light refreshments, 8th floor, San Francisco City College Downtown Campus, 88 Fourth Street, San Francisco, California.

7:00 – 9:00pm "First Annual Community College Film Festival," Room 821, San Francisco City College Downtown Campus, 88 Fourth Street, San Francisco, California. Short films made by students across the state.

7:30 p.m Concert: The World Premier of Earth Tones. Frederick Harris is a virtuoso pianist equally at home in the realms of Beethoven and Bebop. This new, 6-movement work for solo piano, composed by City College Music Instructor Lenny Carlson, is almost entirely notated, but is set in different jazz styles: modern, blues, jazzwaltz, latin, classic blues, avant garde and ragtime. This concert will feature the premiere performance of Earth Tones, along with other selected classical and jazz/standard repertoire pieces.
