I started my education in this country at age 20 as a non-credit ESL student where I completed up to level 4 and also obtained my GED and High School diploma. I enrolled at Los Angeles Mission College where I completed up to ESL level 6 and obtained my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. I then was able to transfer to California State University Northridge where I obtained my Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies and my Masters degree in Career Counseling. I was first generation and a low income student and I had to work full-time throughout my education. The community colleges provided me with the resources and programs that I needed in order to attend a four-year university. I am currently working as an Academic Counselor for Los Angeles Valley College TRIO/Student Support Services and for College of Canyons Non-Credit ESL program. Since I experienced first-hand how community colleges change lives and gave me the opportunity to better myself through education, I am now on a position as an Academic Counselor to influence and assist other students to also accomplish their educational goals through a community college education.
