Using Templates: Windows

Before installation, you may wish to customize these templates with your department name, department chair’s name, etc. Start Word, then use File, Open to open the templates themselves. After making your changes, save the templates.

There are two ways you can use these templates:

  1. Double-click on one of the templates to create a new document based on that template. The first time you save your template, you'll be prompted for a new file name. Don't use File, Open to open the template -- that's for editing the template itself.
  2. You can also move these files into the following directory:

    C:\Documents and Settings\your login\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\

Once moved, to create a new course outline that uses this template, choose the File, New menu option. On the right side of your screen you’ll see several template options – choose the “General Templates” option. You should then see the two templates under the General Tab – pick the appropriate one and click OK.
