Library Workshops (LIS 1000)

Learning to do library and web-based information research, also called information competency, is important for college work and career skills.  Library Information Skills 1000 is a non-credit course offered as seven independent workshops that can be used to help students meet the information competency learning outcomes required by their courses and as part of the CCSF Information Competency graduation requirement.

Library Research Workshops, Online and In-Class

Library Research Workshops - Workshops A, B, C, G,  P and W are offered online in addition to the 7 drop-in workshops held in Rosenberg, room 414. See the schedule of dates and times.

Workshop A Using library catalogs to find books, e-books and other library materials

Workshop B Finding journal, magazine and newspaper articles in periodical databases

Workshop C Advanced web search techniques and web search tools like subject directories

Workshop D The research process. For students doing research assignments. Workshop B and C or W are prerequisites

Workshop G Orientation to library services and resources, as well as other CCSF student services. Essential for new students

Workshop P Citing sources of information for a "Works Cited" (MLA) or "Reference List" (APA) to avoid plagiarizing

Workshop W Evaluating sources, particularly from the Web, to ensure good quality information. Review of search strategy techniques


Workshop A - Finding Books and Other Materials Online

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe and contrast the benefits of using online catalogs to find materials in relation to other online search tools
  • Develop and conduct effective search strategies within online catalogs
  • Interpret, locate and retrieve information, whether a book, video, DVD or e-book
  • Develop an awareness of the basic elements of a standardized citation format for a book


Workshop B - Using Databases to Find Periodical Articles

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and reasons for using periodicals and periodical databases and indexes.
  • Develop and conduct effective search strategies for periodical databases
  • Interpret screen displays and know how to evaluate and locate complete periodical articles
  • Develop an awareness of the basic elements of a standardized citation format for an online periodical article

Workshop C - Web Search Techniques

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate basic understanding of Web and Internet concepts
  • Demonstrate understanding of differences between subject directories and search engines
  • Develop and conduct effective search strategies for subject directories and search engines
  • Develop an awareness of the basic elements of a standardized citation format for a webpage or website


Workshop D - Research Paper Process

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate key steps for researching a topic
  • Write and refine a research question or thesis statement.
  • Research and find at least three good quality sources for specific paper/project
  • Prepare MLA or APA formatted citations for "Works Cited."

Workshop G - Orientation to Library Resources & Services

Learning Outcomes

  • Navigate the LLR website to increase awareness of the variety of on-site and online services and resources
  • Find a textbook on reserve and a book on a topic using the online catalog
  • Identify campus student support services and programs.

Workshop P - Citing Sources Responsibly

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize plagiarism in its various forms and the consequences of plagiarizing
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of paraphrasing, quoting and summarizing
  • Correctly identify citation elements for the purpose of preparing a list of sources in a standardized citation format
  • Correctly prepare in-text (parenthetical) citations

Workshop W - Web Research & Evaluation

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of when to use subject directories vs. search engines
  • Restate a topic into search words and use effective search techniques to focus results
  • Evaluate a web page  using criteria such as: credibility/authority; accuracy; objectivity/bias; currency.
  • Develop an awareness of the basic elements of a standardized citation format for a webpage or website
