Our department includes 9 full-time and 11 part-time instructors – who have professional work experience at companies including Bechtel, Coherent, and General Atomics, published research papers in many areas including nonlinear optics, superconductors, gravitation, and materials analysis and are graduates of U.C Davis, Princeton, University of Colorado, U.C. Santa Cruz, and San Francisco State.

Diana Markham

Diana Markham

Diana has an AB in physics from the University of California at Berkeley, and an MS and  PhD in Physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. During graduate school she was supported by a Graduate Professional Opportunity Program (G*POP) scholarship. Her graduate studies in Nonlinear Optics concentrated on the application of photo-refractive crystals to dynamic memories. After graduate school she worked at General Atomics as a Senior Scientist providing optics support for the Bioscience Division.  Two years later she began her teaching career at Campolindo Highschool in Moraga and continued on to work part-time at CCSF and Los Medanos College before working for 4.5 years full-time at Amercian River College, finally ending up full-time at CCSF in 1999. Since coming to CCSF, Diana has been active in the Friends of the library, the SFUSD teacher education program in science, fundraising for the physics department and the Physics Club.  She is currently the chair of the physics department.
“Looking back, It has been a long road getting to CCSF but it is a dream job for me.  I love helping people to reach towards their full potential and witnessing them make progress towards their goals and dreams.  I am also dedicated to the California Community College ideals of affordable education and opportunity. It is a great place to be a part of and to contribute to the peace and prosperity of our world.”

Roger S. King

Roger S. King

Roger has a BS in physics from the University of Arizona, and a PhD in Physics from the University of California at Davis. His graduate research was in the field of materials analysis, and included work on projects in air quality analysis and medical imaging. Before coming to City College he was an instructor at Southwestern Michigan College. However he got tired of shoveling snow, and made the move to City College of San Francisco in 1999. Roger’s approach to teaching physics emphasizes a conceptual understanding of the material, and that physics really is fun and interesting.

Shruti Kumar

Shridevi Kumar

Shruti has a Masters degree in Electronic Communications from the University of Mumbai, India and a Masters degree in Physics from San Francisco State University. She devised a telephone line based audio muting circuit as part of a research project in India, for which she got recognition in a renowned electronics magazine. At SF State, her research was focused on Superconductors and their use in Superconductor Tunnel Junctions  to improve absorption efficiency. She is extremely passionate about teaching and has broad international experience of teaching in India as well as in colleges like Diablo Valley College, Contra Costa College and Mills College, before joining City College as a full time faculty member. Besides Physics and Science Education, she also dabbles in Bollywood dancing and Art Projects. In Summer, she volunteers for non-profit organizations and offers free tutoring for students from low socio-economic backgrounds.
