The TRST Department SLO Process

The Basis for the Transitional Studies Student Learning Outcomes

All Transitional Studies courses and programs are approved by the CCSF Curriculum Committee, accepted by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, and are updated regularly.
In compliance with California Community Colleges Guidelines for Title 5 Regulations (2008), the City College of San Francisco Transitional Studies Department (TRST) developed the CCSF High School Diploma Program presently in place.

The Major Learning Outcomes (MLOs) incorporated in the TRST high school, adult basic education, and vocational courses were guided by the California State Board of Education Standards or the Department of Labor 2000 report, What Work Requires of Schools: A SCANS Report for America 2000, which outlines the foundation skills and workplace competencies that “enable students to develop those high performance skills needed to succeed in the high performance workplace.”

Development of the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), Course and Program Level

  • In the summer of 2012, a group of TRST instructors met and developed ten student learning outcomes. As well as the SCANS skills, we chose to use the Anchor Standards developed by the Common Cores State Standards’ Initiative led by The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center). In addition, each high school core area has two to three SLOs particular to that field of study.

  • At the TRST Department meeting on Flex Day Fall 2012, the proposed TRST SLOs were presented to the faculty and staff. Those present unanimously voted to adopt the Departmental, Course and HS Core Student Learning Outcomes.
  • In the Fall 2012 semester, the TRST Department began the assessment phase of the TRST Departmental, Course and HS Core Student Learning Outcomes.
