ALL-AMERICAN HONOR TO ALYSSA STEMBER

Alyssa Stember –City College of San Francisco, Swimming

Stember capped off her successful community college swimming career by winning both the 50-backstroke and 100-backstroke at the Coast Conference Championships (with new school record times). Stember swam career best times in both events and became the first swimmer in CCSF's newly established Women's Swim Team to qualify for the State Championships. At the State Meet Alyssa Stember bettered her seed times and personal best times and placed 7th in the 50-backstroke and 14th in the 100 backstroke. She set new CCSF records in both events and achieved All-American status in the 50 Backstroke with the time of 28.89.  In order to be an All-American swimmer, a swimmer’s time(s) must be ranked in the top 16 in Junior College swimming nationwide, between Conference Championships, California Community College State Championships, and the National Junior College Athletics Association Championships.

For her accomplishments, Stember was Honorable Mention "Athletes of the Month" selection for the month of April 2011 by the California Community College Athletic Association.

The City College women’s swim team went up against Laney College at the Wellness Center for their second pre-season meet of the season on Feb 18., and the swimmers had an opportunity to strengthen technique.

With four returning swimmers this semester, two from local high schools and the rest from east and south bay, City College defeated Laney College 142-56.

Coach Phong Pham, who is working his way through his third year at City College, said he expected captains Cathryn Gibson and Alyssa Stember to do well. And well they did.

The meet began with a 200-yard medley relay with Gibson, Stember, Tangni Nietschmann and Sarah Woods. The team of four came in first at 2:06.59.

Next came the 1,000-yard freestyle as four swimmers leaped into the pool embarking on the 20-lap long event.

Keeping a steady and rhythmic pace, the women swam lap after lap as their teammates were seated at the end of each lane. Rams’ Andrea Waters came in third place at 14:31.48 averaging about 44 seconds per lap.

In the 200-yard and 50-yard Freestyle, Gibson won her second event and came in first with the final time of 2:11.32 for the four-lap freestyle. Stember also came in first again with 27.69 seconds in the one-lap.

She finished the meet with three first place finishes along with  teammate Gibson who also finished with three victories including the 500-yard freestyle.

The next meet the Rams will participate in will be on Feb. 25 where the women will travel down I-280 against College of San Mateo and Foothill at San Mateo. The meet will start at 2 p.m.

New Team Making Splash in its First Season

In its inaugural season, the City College women’s swim team is gaining plenty of momentum toward the Coast Conference Championships, as they easily outscored Cabrillo College 124-30 in their dual meet April 9 at the Wellness Center.

“During spring break, we trained really hard in practice,” head coach Phong Pham said. “We trained hard with our eyes on the conference championships.”

Rams swimmers Alyssa Stember and Roselin Sretpisalsilp easily won their respective races, with Stember claiming first place in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, and Sretpisalsilp winning the 100-yard and 500-yard freestyle.

“The 50 freestyle is my favorite event because I’ve been improving the most in that event,”  Stember said. “I’ve never been good at freestyle races until now, so this is really exciting for me, especially since I haven’t swam competitively in three years.”

Sretpisalsilp agreed that she has also been improving throughout the season.
“I’ve been lucky enough to do better in every meet, and I’ve been working hard to get my times down,” she said. “Today was really impressive because I didn’t really race in the events I usually do.”

Pham likes the way his team has improved during its first season competing. He expects his team to be highly competitive at the Coast Conference Championships set to take place April 22-24 at West Valley College. His goal is for the team to finish in the top three.

“We have improved tremendously over the course of the season, and we don’t have a lot of swimmers with competitive swimming experience,” Pham said. “It’s been a good learning experience as we get ready for the conference championships.”
