Lila Chan, Sophomore
Lincoln High School
Major: Business
Chan has played Badminton for over 8 years. At Lincoln High School, she competed in singles and doubles matches and was named her team’s most valuable player. “I really enjoy the coaching staff that City College has for the badminton team because they helped me improve.” Chan plans on graduating from CCSF with an accounting degree. Chan enjoys hiking and playing tennis for recreation.

Wendi Chan, Sophomore
Developing Virtue Secondary, Ukiah
Major: Child Development
Chan has played organized badminton for two years (one year at Common Wealth Sec. High School in Singapore during the 2004-2005 school year). Although she has only played competitively for a couple of years, her love for badminton has been lifelong. “Badminton plays a very significant part in my lifestyle. Other than swimming, it is the sport I grew up in.”
Chan is currently majoring in Child Development and plans to start a career in teaching or social work. Outside of school and athletics, she devotes her time to volunteer work, reading books, watching her favorite television series “Big Bang Theory,” and traveling.

Lydia Chen, Freshman
George Washington High School, San Francisco
Major: Undeclared
Chen competed in doubles badminton for four years in high school prior to joining the CCSF Women’s Badminton Team. What does playing badminton mean to the freshman? She’ll reply with simply one word, “Everything.”
Chen is primarily focused on her education. But when she is not studying or competing in badminton matches, Chen enjoys learning the Japanese language and cooking. She also makes time to watch her favorite television show “Adventure Time.”

Vicky Chen, Sophomore
Zhixin High School, Guangdong, China
Major: Business
Chen, who never played badminton competitively in high school, was a key part of CCSF’s 2010 Badminton State Championship Team. She says that playing badminton has given her a chance to build meaningful relationships. “I met a lot of friends while playing badminton. It’s an important activity to my health and social life.”
Chen plans to transfer to the University of British Columbia for the fall 2012 semester. Her interests outside of school and badminton include swimming, reading, traveling the world, and keeping up with her favorite musician Teresa Teng.

Yupar Khin, Sophomore
Yankin High School, Burma
Major: Biology
Khin, whose parents played badminton, never played on her high school team. However, what she learned from her parents and CCSF coaches has helped her team’s success. “I love being a part of a team and I want to help my team reach a specific level.”
She is currently majoring in biology. When she is not studying or competing, Khin loves to play piano and sing. Her favorite singer today is Grammy-Award winning artist Adele.

Queen Pabellan, Freshman
Vintage High School, Napa
Major: Undeclared
Pabellan has played competitively for four years. During her time at Vintage, she led her team to the San Joaquin Section Playoffs. She says that when she plays badminton she feels , “The passion that I got from my mother.”
Pabellan plans to transfer to a California State University to continue her education. She has an interest in political activism, music, and reading. She also likes to watch her favorite television show “How I Met Your Mother.”

Cecilia Ren, Sophomore
Abraham Lincoln High School, San Francisco
Major: Media Studies
Ren played singles badminton for all four of her high school years prior to joining the CCSF team. She says that badminton is important to her because of the challenges she has to overcome on the court. “Badminton gives me a chance to push myself past my limits.”
She is currently taking classes in media studies and plans to transfer to the University of California, Berkeley and possibly join a sports team. Ren enjoys playing tennis, swimming, listening to music, and catching the newest episodes of “The Office.”

Tiffany Saelinh, Freshman
Lowell High School, San Francisco
Major: Computer Science
Saelinh, who played doubles badminton at Lowell and was a part of her high school’s 2009 championship team, is appreciative of her CCSF teammates’ camaraderie and the guidance of her coaches. “Playing badminton gives me a place to belong. The team and the coaches push me to be the best that I can be both on and off the court.”
She is currently majoring in Computer Science and plans to transfer with an Associate’s Degree to University of San Francisco or University of California, Irvine. Outside of school and athletics, Saelinh loves to hike, travel, watch her favorite TV show “Bones,” and practice French.

Monica Tang, Freshman
Abraham Lincoln High School
Major: Biology
Tang played doubles badminton for four years at Abraham Lincoln. She says that competing in badminton provides her with a motivation to succeed. “It is important because it pushes me to be a better player.”
Her educational goal is to transfer to San Francisco State University and graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science. She would eventually like to become a veterinarian. Aside from school and athletics, Tang volunteers at the SF SPCA, listens to music, and watches her favorite TV show “Fringe.”

Pang Vang, Sophomore
Duncan Polytechnical High School, Fresno
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Vang has played competitive Badminton for three years. She enjoys the teamwork and competition that are associated with Badminton. “I enjoy the feeling that you are working hard and improving. It helps me build confidence.”
She would like to receive a Bachelors Degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and continue to play badminton. Her interests outside of school and athletics include art, reading, and music. A goal of Pang’s would be to travel to Japan and live there for an extended period of time.

Evonne Zheng, Freshman
George Washington High School, San Francisco
Major: Business Administration
Zheng played singles and doubles badminton for four years at George Washington. Her high school team placed second in the city from 2007 through 2009 and finished first in 2010. Her competitiveness during her high school playing days has helped her succeed at the college ranks. “I don’t want to lose to people whom I think I’m able to beat.”
Zheng is currently majoring in Business Administration and hopes to find a job within the finance and marketing field. When she is not studying or playing badminton, Zheng likes to watch the news, listen to music, and draw.
