Beth Freedman has been advocating and working for the health of women, young people and LGBT people since 1993. She is a full time Instructor and has been involved with City College of San Francisco since 1995: as a student, classified staff and now as a full-time Instructor.

Her past work includes working with the University of California, San Francisco Center for AIDS Prevention Studies on making HIV prevention research more accessible to affected communities and as a Community Educator and Trainer for The Riley Center, Shelter and Services for Battered Women and their Children. She also has worked in the areas of sexuality and women's reproductive health.

She is the coordinator of the Metro Academies of Health at City College of San Francisco.

Carol Badran has a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development and a Master’s in Public Health.  She has dedicated her professional life to working with underserved youth, primarily in the U.S., and also in Ecuador and El Salvador.   She is especially passionate about training current and future youth workers through CCSF’s youth worker certificate program.

Ms. Goodfriend-Koven has been teaching at CCSF since 2002. She states that "learning is dynamic, a process of exchanging and changing. We learn for ourselves, and also to share our knowledge with our communities. My courses all involve the practical application of theory and course content within a community setting. Within the broad definition of health - students work in the areas most interesting and relevant to their experience. They work on personal transformation, and also at improving the health of their community.

A particular concern is finding ways to eliminate health disparities so that all people can count on the same potential for a long and healthy life. I see students as change-agents who can begin to build towards equality in health for all. As an instructor, I too, am constantly learning from my students, and from the experiences of the 21st century. The classroom becomes a laboratory; for students and for the instructor.”

Ms. Goodfriend-Koven is a member of the Northern California Society of Public Health Educators. She is on the board of directors of California Healthcare Interpreting Association and Walden Center and School. She also volunteers at La Peña.

Nora loves to camp and hike, listen to and play music, grow organic vegetables and enjoy time with her extended family.

Edith Guillén-Núñez has a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling and is a Marriage Family Registered Intern. She also has a Juris Doctor and is licensed attorney in California and Florida.

Edith has been working as a therapist with children and families for approximately ten years. As a bilingual, English/Spanish therapist, Edith's area of focus has been working with low income, culturally diverse people specifically in the areas of domestic violence, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, child abuse and neglect and homelessness.

In her legal practice, Edith also specializes working with children and families.  Edith's experience has included working within the dependency, juvenile system representing children, and family court. Currently as a family law attorney Edith works primarily with low-income, limited English speaking people who have been affected by domestic violence.

Emalie Huriaux is thrilled ot join the Department as part-time faculty in Spring 2013 to teach Health 91C.

Emalie Huriaux has worked for over a decade with programs focused on sexual health, women's health, and drug user health issues, particularly with programs focused on preventing HIV, hepatitis C, and drug overdose. Emalie Huriaux currently works at the San Francisco Department of Public Health participating in and facilitating HIV- and hepatitis C- related planning projects in order to promote an integrated, coordinated citywide effort. In addition, she provides training and capacity-building assistance to substance use programs integrating HIV testing and prevention services and HIV testing programs integrating hepatitis C testing. She is the former co-chair of the San Francisco Hepatitis C Task Force. In addition to her work with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Emalie is a consultant providing harm reduction training to community-based organizations. Emalie Huriaux is excited to work with students to ensure what they learn in class extends beyond the four walls of the classroom and  benefits their personal and professional lives.

Tandy Iles is a full time faculty member and has been the Director of the Drug & Alcohol Studies Program since its inception in 1998. She has over twenty-five years in the field with an emphasis on community health and cultural competency. She currently teaches Beginning and Advanced Fieldwork classes, Introduction to Drug & Alcohol Studies, and College Success courses.

Tandy is the co-author of “It's All About Us” African American Women Fighting Against Tobacco. Tandy also serves on the board of the California Association of Alcohol & Drug Educators (CAADE).

Rama Ali Kased is the Coordinator and Instructor for the Metro Academy of Health in the Health Education department at both City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University. Kased also sits on the advisory boards of multiple community and campus-based organizations including Huckleberry Wellness Academy, SFSU Student Success Program, and the Arab Resource and Organizing Center in San Francisco. In addition, she works with other community-based organizations and non-profit institutions in the Bay Area and New York City, where she provides leadership and base building training and curriculum campaign and development support. She is currently working on a dissertation that focuses on community health, critical pedagogy, and social justice.

Ms. Legion has been teaching at CCSF since 1994. She uses a combination of active reality-based learning, popular education and performance-based education.

Ms. Legion has been involved in coordinating Community Health Works of San Francisco, a partnership of CCSF and San Francisco State University - a multi-project program devoted to eliminating health inequality and diversifying the public health and primary care workforce. She also speaks at national conferences several times a year.

Ms. Nerenberg has been working in the field of aging and elder abuse prevention for over 25 years. Sal Núñez is a full time faculty member and has been teaching in the Drug & Alcohol Studies Program since 2000, and coordinating the Community Mental Health Worker program since 2010. He teaches Treatment Modalities, Physiological Effects of Addiction, Drugs & Society, Cultural Aspects of Addiction and other related courses.

Dr. Núñez is a practicing clinician, researcher, and consultant with over 14 years of experience in the field of professional psychology.

His interests lie in cultural clinical practice, neuropsychology, chemical dependence, pediatric health, indigenous medicine, and therapeutic drumming as a treatment modality. Bruce Occeña has over twenty years of experience in the field of public health focused primarily on substance abuse prevention and treatment, HIV outreach and counseling, and homeless services. His overarching focus has been increasing access to care for marginalized populations.

Bruce's current efforts are focused on increasing access to interpreter services in public health settings. In the area of substance abuse services, he has a full range of experiences as a clinician, planner, evaluator and administrator.

Bruce currently teaches HLTH-74 (Criminology & Addiction).

Ms. Roth has been teaching at CCSF since 1978. She believes that good health is the foundation of happiness, and that everyone can learn the knowledge and skills to improve their health and the health of their families, contributing to the health of our communities and nation.

With information and experiential activities, Ms. Roth tries to provide a lively mix whereby students can take charge of their health as well as understand important issues in public health. Her approach is holistic and feminist, honoring the body, mind and spirit, investigating diverse approaches to health and health care, helping students become wise health care consumers.

She is a long-time member and previous precinct representative of AFT 2121, a member of the Women's Caucus, co-director of Project SAFE, and has produced Safer Sex Playshops; Fairs 1991-2001. She is a previous Faculty Sponsor of the Safe Sex Club, CCSF AIDS Advisory Board and has been a Flex Day speaker.

Ms. Roth is a member of the Women's Health Educators Network, Women's Health Rights Coalition Teleconference Educator/Speaker, and Women's Health series, University of Texas. She is a former Board Member of the Min An Health Center, Women's AIDS Network, and San Francisco Women's Health Center. Ms. Roth is also listed in “Who's Who in American College Teachers”.

I have been teaching at CCSF since 2009 and also work full time for the Alliance HealthProject (AHP) in San Francisco as a Trainer/Curriculum Writer.

I’ve been filled with much diversity since the day I decided to work in the field of HIV/AIDS. This field has taught me the importance of being culturally relevant in all aspects of my life and that we not only learn by doing but that we learn the most by listening to others. This is the philosophy I bring to a classroom,training or even during the days when I did street outreach to drug users and sex workers. I have had the opportunity to be a health educator, a teacher and a trainer in the field of HIV prevention.

To meet the needs and /or expectations of students I find that a course that offers knowledge in addition to skills building is the best way for an individual to learn. The course needs to be serious, fun and engaging to keep students interested. Essential to this commitment is the creation of an inclusive and diverse learning environment where educational, professional, and personal goals can be fulfilled.

I have been an instructor at CCSF since 2010.  In my public healthwork I am particularly interested in working to remove blame and stigma as factors in how individuals and communities are treated for health conditions.

Since coming to City CollegeI have taught Women’s Health, Human Sexuality, Introduction to Health and Wellness, Introduction to the Drug and Alcohol Certificate, Drugs & Society, Harm Reduction and Health, Demystifying Health Research, Health Education and Chronic Condition Management, HIV/STI Prevention, and Non-Profit Grants Management.  Prior to City College I developed and implemented policies to change how the City of San Francisco (including Child Welfare and the Police) responds to incidents of domestic violence, and worked as an educator and advocate with and on behalf of targets of hate motivated violence.  I currently serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors for HEPPAC, the HIV Education and Prevention Project of Alameda County, which works to stop the spread ofHIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C among injection drug users in Alameda County.

Professor Tse began teaching at CCSF part-time in 1990 and full-time as of 1994.

She teaches Health 53 and Health 25. She is the former Program Director of the CPR, First Aid and Safety Program and taught CPR, Advanced First Aid, and Child Health and Safety Education classes.

Professor Tse has worked as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) in health insurance companies, San Francisco Department of Public Health, and various community-based organizations such as the American Lung Association, Children's Council, Wu Yee Children Services and Head Starts. She has actively facilitated the translation of CPR, First Aid, and Child Health and Safety Education material into languages such as Chinese and Spanish.

Craig Wenzl joined the Drug & Alcohol Studies Program as Associate Director in 2005. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing/Communication from the University of Central Arkansas. Prior to City College, Craig worked for ten years as the Director of Programs at the Monterey County AIDS Project in Monterey and Salinas, California.  

In addition to program coordinating, Craig also worked as a community health outreach worker, HIV testing counselor, and group facilitator, with a focus on substance use and sexual risk.

Mena Zaminsky holds a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Expressive Arts Therapy. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor (CATC) and has a psychotherapy private practice in San Francisco.  

Mena is an adjunct faculty in the CCSF Drug & Alcohol Studies Program where she teaches HLTH-100 (Introduction to Drug & Alcohol Studies) and HLTH-79A (Beginning Field Work).  She previously taught  HLTH-77 (Co-Occurring Disorders), HLTH-76 (Group Facilitation) and HLTH-83 (Motivational Counseling).  

Mena is also a member of the Drug & Alcohol Studies Community Advisory Board and a past Board member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association, where she previously served as the Publications Committee Co-Chair, Newsletter Editor and Artist Committee Co-Chair.

Mena has also taught at JFK University, as well as provided trainings on Using Expressive Arts Therapy in the Treatment of Addictions.
