Programs

 

The Child Development and Family Studies department is very complex. We have four major areas of program information:

 

Course, Certificate, Degree and Transfer Information

A. Credit Courses in Child Development and Family Studies

A full range of credit course work featuring over 100  sections of courses on child development topics, leading to an AA with a major in Child Development, or certificates in various interest areas. Courses are offered during the day, evenings and weekends at most of the CCSF sites throughout the City. B. Certificates, Permits, Degrees, Credentials

The Child Development & Family Studies Department offers many certificates for CDEV professionals. The certificates are tied to specific areas of expertise recognized by employers and the field. Additionally, students can earn Child Development Permits by completing courses at CCSF. The Department hosts PDP advisors who can certify permit applications for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  The Department also offers an AS degree in Child Development and a wide range of courses that support transfer to 4 year colleges and universities. Students can also enroll in pre-credential, lower division courses required for the K-12 teaching credentials in California. We are here to support your college and career success!

C. Transfer and Graduation

Counselors are available to meet with CDEV students to develop Educational Plans, submit graduation and certificate applications and obtain transfer, graduation and academic support. Specific cohort programs and student support efforts funded by a wide range of funders are available to assist CDEV students interested in transfer, graduation, permit application support and career development.

Careers with Children and Youth

A. Family Child Care Training Program

Courses, resources and services specifically for family child care providers are available through the department. Support for current and future child care providers is available HERE.

B. Special Needs Project (pdf File download)

We believe that all children deserve an equitable education and we strive to help make that a reality by offering high-quality coursework and support for special educators.The Special Needs Program offers integrated and content-specific coursework to professional early childhood and K-12 educators with the vision of more effectively teaching and supporting children with exceptional needs and their families in San Francisco.  

C. SF Early Childhood Professional Development Project

A resource & support center designed to assist early childhood professionals with career, permit, coursework, & employment information. Call (415) 452-5605 or click HERE.

D. Teacher Prep Center

Individuals interested in becoming K-12 teachers can receive advising, pathway and transfer support, resources and information on related activities including, mentoring, Future Teachers Club, field experience opportunities and specific course offerings for future teachers. SFSU courses offered at the CCSF campus in related areas are available, as are advisors and counselors. Call (415) 239-3890, or go HERE.

E. Safe Start

F. School-Age and Youth Worker Program

School-Age and Youth Worker Program: Individuals interested in becoming school-age or youth workers in after school or recreational settings are encouraged to enroll in courses leading to the Youth Worker Certificate. Additional courses for youth workers can be found in a variety of departments, including Health Education and IDST. Student Support Programs and Resources

A. California Early Childhood Mentor Teacher Program

Provides a system of teacher and director mentoring in the field of early childhood education in San Francisco. B. Child Development Training Consortium

Supports training and professional growth by offering tuition reimbursement for those working in the field. Also provides reimbursement for the cost of obtaining the child development permit. C. Jumpstart

A service-learning project offered in partnership with San Francisco State University. Students receive stipends, experience and credit for working in SF preshools. D. Youth Worker to Teacher

A cohort program funded by CALGRIP and offered in partnership with SFSU, the Y2T Program supports students interested in working with school-age chidren or youth in a range of after-school or youth settings. Students also receive cohort support, tutoring, mentoring and transfer support to transfer to SFSU and obtain BA/BS degrees and then teaching credentials. Students are prepared to obtain an AS degree, a youth worker certificate and/or become transfer ready. E. METRO Academy Cohort in Child Development

A cohort program designed to support the early childhood workforce in obtaining an AS degree and transfering to SFSU to obtain a BA/BS degree. This program offers cohort support, tutoring, mentoring, faculty learning communities and integrated support to working CDEV students committed to remaining in the field. It is part of the METRO Academy model in Health and follows the METRO model in the early childhood area of emphasis. Contact Gabriel Martinez Bieldeck for enrollment information at (415) 452-5636.


F. San Francisco Child Care Facilities and Demographic Information

The Child Care Facilities Fund of the Low Income Investment Fund sponsors a site that maps all child care facilities in San Francisco. Dempgraphic information on San Francisco child care facilities are available at this site: www.sfccmap.com

H. Future Teacher Student Club

The Student Future Teacher Club is available for students interested in joining other students interested in education, teaching and working with K-12 children and youth. Please contact faculty advisor, Tracy Burt at tburt@ccsf.edu or 452-7171 for additional information.

I. Financial Support

CCSF has a variety of financial supports in place for students. Students should contact Financial Aid and submit a FAFSA in order to become eligible for federal and state aid programs. The CCSF Scholarship Office has many scholarships that are available  including several that are specifically for CDEV students. The DEBS Scholarship, the Kate Rosen Scholarship, the Wells Fargo Future Teacher Scholarship, the Osher Scholarship and several others are specific scholarships that CDEV students may be eligible for. A. Child Development Centers

Child Care and Development Centers serve CCSF student - parents and other families and their children and provide practicum training sites for students:

B. Foster and Kinship Care Education Schedule of Classes

Classes for foster parents offered in the community in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Human Services. C. Lactation Center

The Child Development & Family Studies Dept. operates Effie's Room in the Orfalea Family Center (OFC 200) on the Main Campus. The room provides access to new moms who need to use a private lactation area. Baby-changing facilities, a refrigerator and privacy are available during the day. The area is open on a first-come, first serve basis during the school year or by monthly reservation and is generally open between 9-4 daily. Funded by the Orfalea Foundation, the lactation center provides support to new breast-feeding moms who are working or attending school. Employees and students are invited to use the facility. D. Parent & Infant and Parent & Child Classes

Adult education classes designed for parents and children at 15 sites throughout the City. Enrollment information can be obtained by calling 415 452-5905 or 239-3172 or to view  the list of classes go HERE.
 
E. Parenting Series - Free Evening Lectures for Parents and Guardians

Lectures for parents and guardians on a wide range of parenting topics.  For the SPRING 2012 series, held on Tuesday eveningsat 6:30PM at MUB 240 on the Main Campus go HERE.

Classes for meeting court mandated parenting education requirements.
