California Historical Society

A state-wide membership based organization providing an extensive collection of manuscripts, maps, posters, printed ephemera, books, and pamphlets relevant to the history of California.

Sutro Library (California State Library)
One of the largest genealogical collections west of Salt Lake City, Sutro has extensive resources for states other than California and basic resources for California.

The Foundation Center
Collects, organizes, and communicates information on U.S. philanthropy; conducts and facilitates research on trends in the field; and provides education and training.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Historical Society
The Society maintains one of the world's largest collections of primary source material about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history. Open to the public free of charge.

Helen Brown Lombardi Library of International Affairs (World Affairs Council)
The collection specializes in materials on international relations with an emphasis on the political and economic relations between countries.

Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture
Northern California's largest horticultural library covers all aspects of horticulture including gardening, garden design, botanical art, ethnobotany and pest management.

Institute for Health and Healing Library (Planetree) of California Pacific Medical Center
One of the largest, free, public medical/health libraries in the country, Plantetree offers a comprehensive collection of a variety of information and resources for people facing an illness, for their loved ones and for anyone who would like to learn more about healing and well being. Most of the resources are unavailable or hard to find on the Internet.

San Francisco Law Library
The Law Library serves the courts, departments of the City and County of San Francisco, members of the Bar, and the public at three locations: the main library in the Veterans War Memorial Building, the Monadnock branch in the financial district, and the attorney reference room in the courts building on McAllister Street.

San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum
The collection contains more than two million items, including books, periodicals, playbills, clippings, photographs, posters, sheet music, plays and libretti, radio interviews, videotapes, musical theater recordings, theatrical design research materials, costume and set designs, as well as the archives of several local organizations and the personal papers of Bay Area performers and patrons.
