Nursing Subject Guide
Subject
guides are designed to help students begin the research process,
find reputable sources, and save time.
Searching
the Library Catalog for Books & Other Materials
To
locate books and other materials in CCSF Libraries, select the Library
Catalog from the Library's Homepage. You will notice
many ways to search, such as Title, Author, Subject, Subject Keyword,
etc.
Examples of Subject searches include: nursing, nursing assessment, cancer nursing,
community health nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing
Reserve Materials
Reserve Materials
include books, sample tests, class notes, and other items that instructors
put at the library for class use. The check out time is shorter
than regular circulating books.
To search for
a book on reserve in the Library
Catalog, select either Reserves
by Course or Reserves by Instructor.
When you have
located the materials, write down the Call Number and Title and
present this to a staff person at the Circulation Desk.

Browsing the Library Collection
Materials
in the Library are shelved by call number according to the Library
of Congress classification system. Books are arranged on the
shelves by subject. Relevant areas in the collection to find materials
on Nursing include:

Searching
for Articles in Periodical Databases
Periodical databases
group together journal, magazine, and newspaper articles by subject.
They also usually provide abstracts (brief summaries) and the full
text of the articles. Do you need help identifying the differences
between scholarly
journal v. popular magazine articles?
Note:
Most periodical
databases are part of the private, passworded Web, so you
will need to have a current CCSF ID card with a barcode to access
those that CCSF subscribes to. You get the free barcode from the
Library either in person or online.
Health Reference Center Academic Health & Wellness Resource Center
Databases with citations and full-text of articles from Gale Cengage that focus on health and medicine, with coverage from 1980 to the present.
You can find reference information and periodical articles from these databases.
CQ
Researcher
CQ provides lengthy research reports written by the editorial staff of the Congressional Quarterly Co.
Reports related to nursing or nurses include nursing shortage and medical mistakes.
PubMed
A service from the U. S. National Library of Medicine that "includes over 17 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources."
Ethnic
Newswatch
Useful for community health topics related to specific groups of people. Comprised of newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority
and native press in America, this unique body of materials covers
a wide range of current topics and countless other social, political
and educational subjects. More than 200 publications covering 1995
to the present are represented, and searchable in both English and
Spanish.

This site provides many links to extensive nursing
resources. It has a subject directory that organizes web resources by
categories which include nursing literature, medical journals with full
text articles, nursing employment, and nursing associations. It also
offers free electronic newsletter, Nurse-zine, through email or on the
Web.
Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychatric Technicians (BVNPT)
Site of the California Board of Vocational Nursing and
Psychatric Technicians. Provides
information on licensure, law and legislation, continuining education,
consumer complaints and links to professional association web sites.
Nursing Center
Owned by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, the site
provides many full text articles in its Continuing Education section.
Journals include AJN American Journal in Nursing, Nursing Management,
and The Nurse Practitioner.
American Nurses Association | Nursing World
This is the site of the American Nurses Association. It
provides links to the free Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, a
peer-reviewed electronic journal, state nursing associations, and
American Nurses Foundation.
Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)
It is the site of the California Board of Registered Nursing, which provides various resources including licensure
information, legislative updates, Board activities, continuing education, and consumer complaints

MedlinePlus
From the National Libraries of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, this provides a searchable medical dictionary, encyclopedia, drug and supplements database, and health topics.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research
The provides information about human drugs such as label information and FDA approval history. Look for the Drugs@FDA search link, and links for healthcare professionals, consumers, the Drug Information Pathfinder, and more.
Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy
Searchable, online version, last updated November 2005, of the 18th (2006) edition of this general medical text.
National Institutes of Health
General health information about health, and news about current developments in medicine.
Professional Organizations
Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychatric Technicians (BVNPT)
