A Book is Worth a Thousand Words: by c.j. grossman
Artist statement (excerpts): "Every story demands its own unique way of being told; I am the facilitator of that creative process. The stories are often edgy, dealing with issues of gender and sometimes abuse. At first, the reader may feel uneasy holding a stuffed pair of men's briefs which comprises the cover of a book about a story of a woman who is sexually harrased. Or holding a purse and reading the message written on condoms. Yet the unease dispels quickly because humor is used as a tool to draw the reader in. The materials I use are common ones - textiles, paper, condoms, plastics, and metal, but employed with with a different perspective. With my Safe Sex Series, I approach the message of the necessity for safe sex in a distinctive manner, one that hopefully appeals to people of all ages, including young people. Brochures are no longer effective; we must learn to dispatch information about AIDS in a more provocative way." c. j. grossman is a book artist and educator. She has exhibited her work nationally, at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., and the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, La Jolla, CA, among others, and locally at the San Francisco Public Library, the San Francisco Center for the Book and the Mission Cultural Center and other local art institutions and libraries. She teaches art and book arts at local schools and libraries. |
