Tapa, the Cloth That Binds Us
"Welcome to this installation, this multimedia tapa cloth is a project that we've built collectively. Pieced together, this conceptual tapa cloth expresses the voices of Pacific Islanders here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Student's migration stories, personal photos, poetry, titles of literature by Oceanic authors and contemporary art by Pacific Islander artists are combined with traditional tapa. Tapa cloth: Fijian masi, Samoan siapo, Hawaiian kapa, and Tongan ngatu for the framework for our contemporary and diasporic tapa." --from the Exhibition statement |
